Union Springs - Donald Conant Parker, 91, a resident of Union Springs, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2018 at his home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. from the Union Springs Presbyterian Church with Dr. Bill Sauser officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery with Gray Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Parker was born in Union Springs, AL on July 27, 1926 to Donald W. and Mabel Moore Parker. He was born at a time when it was common to see mules and wagons on the main street in town. In 1944 at the age of 17 he joined the U. S. Navy, and went to boot camp two days after his graduation from high school. In combat, he served on the USS Bennington and the USS Lexington in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he continued his education at Auburn University where he earned a Bachelors of Forestry in 1950, and he married his childhood sweetheart, Alla Maye Springer. After a short stint working in forestry, he returned to Union Springs where he worked with his father-in-law at Springer Lumber Company. In 1957 he opened Builders Supply Company which he owned until his retirement 35 years later. Donald was always involved in community affairs. He served as the chairman of the Board of Education for Bullock County, was a lifelong member of the Union Springs Presbyterian Church, where he served as Elder, a member of the Historical Society, and a member of the Union Springs Exchange Club. Love of God, love of family, love of country, love of community, love of life: these are the essence of who Donald was. Mr. Parker preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Alla Maye Parker, son, Roger Parker, and brother, Hunter Parker.He is survived by two sons, David (Sally) Parker of Montgomery, AL and Don (Mary) Parker of Atlanta, GA; three grandchildren: Campbell Parker, Lillian Parker, and Lauren Parker.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, June 12, 1018 from 5:00 p.m. until 7 :00 p.m. at Gray Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Union Springs Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 388, Union Springs, AL 36089, Bullock County Humane Society, P. O. Box 921, Union Springs, AL 36089 or , 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
