John Sorrell Braswell

Mathews - John Sorrell Braswell, a resident of Mathews, Alabama, died Wednesday, May 16, 2018. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 20, 2018 at Mount Hilliard United Methodist Church located at 1648 County Road 14, Union Springs, Alabama, officiated by Cecil C. Spear, Jr. A visitation will be held prior to the funeral from noon until 2:00 p.m. followed by a graveside service.

He was born to John Burl Braswell and Etta Virginia Braswell on September 9, 1940 in Shopton, Alabama. After graduating from Union Springs High School where he was a four-sport star athlete in football, basketball, baseball and track, he entered Troy University playing baseball there before being drafted by the Cleveland Indians. He later returned to Bullock County after attending forestry school to begin his life's work in the timber business. A consummate outdoorsman, he was an avid hunter and fisherman and for many years enjoyed surveying the beauty of nature riding the trails of his spacious farmland.

John Braswell was the founder and owner of Braswell Wood Company in Union Springs, Alabama. He retired as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of AmeriFirst Bank. He also served as a member of the Alabama Forestry Commission and was the longest serving member of the Board of Trustees of the ForestFund.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Carolyn Braswell Harris. He is survived by Patsy Weldon Head whose devoted care during his declining health brought him comfort and peace. Also surviving him is his former wife, Jane Spear Braswell with whom he shared an enduring friendship and two children: a son, Bradley Sorrell Braswell and his wife, Elizabeth Peterson Braswell and grandchildren, Virginia Jane Braswell, John Bradley "JB" Braswell, Jessica M. Holt and Sarah M. Black (Shane) and great-grandson, Brooks Black; and a daughter, Lynn Braswell Haynes and her husband, William Sidney Haynes and grandchildren, Grace Gunter Haynes and William Braswell Haynes, all of Montgomery, Alabama. He is also survived by his nephew, Mark Harris (Bobbie) and his niece, Susan Staker.

The memory of his generous spirit, fullness of life and compassion for his fellow man will live on in the hearts of the family he loved so dearly and of his wide circle of friends. Love is a fabric that never fades, no matter how often it is washed in the tears of grief.

Pallbearers will be William B. Haynes, John Bradley Braswell, Casey Jones, Allen Osborne, Mark Harris, Jeff Harris, John Harris and Scott Head. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Rutland, Louis Rutland, Jenks Parker, Jack Noble, Doyle Fuller, the Union Springs Exchange Club and the AmeriFirst Bank Board of Directors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Hilliard Cemetery Fund, care of Greg Powell, 2856 Hwy. 14, Union Springs, AL 36089.
