NICK POLIZOS Obituary
POLIZOS, Nick V., a well-known restaurateur and long time resi-dent of Montgomery, died Thursday, October 27, after a brief illness. He was 87. One of five chil-dren, Nick was born in the small vil-lage of Klima, on the island of Sko-pelos, Greece. He was a nurturing and loving husband and father, as well as an adviser, friend, and phi-losopher. Nick was also a skilled and dedicated fisherman, a pas-sion he shared generously with ev-eryone he knew. At the age of 17, Nick left Greece to make the U.S. his home, and worked with his fa-ther at a cafT in Hollandale, Missis-sippi. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a Military Policeman, rising to the rank of sergeant. During the war Nick met and fell in love with Callie Moraitakis of Atlanta, Georgia. In 1946 they married and settled in At-lanta, where Nick became a part-ner in Jimmy¦s Steak House restau-rant. In 1952 he moved his family to Montgomery where he was co-owner of the Azalea Manor restau-rant on the Atlanta Highway. In De-cember 1955 Nick, along with his brother and a first cousin, opened the Riviera Restaurant on the Mo-bile Highway. The restaurant quick-ly became one of the premiere din-ing establishments in the city. In addition to the Riviera, Nick and his partners later operated the Airport Riviera at Dannelly Field, where he worked until his retirement in 1988. Nick¦s first wife Callie died in Flor-ence, Italy in 1996, on a trip cele-brating the couple¦s 50th anniver-sary. He met Janette Hall in 1997, and they married in 2000. The cou-ple recently celebrated five won-derful years of marriage. Nick is survived by his devoted wife Jan-ette, three children, Vic Polizos, Sandra Polizos Corley (Bob), and Renee Polizos Whitmire (Steve); three step-children, Debra Mat-thews (Willie), Donna Gantt (Wyatt), and Shay Hall (Stacia); six grand-children, Niko and Callie Corley, Vick and Alexei Huebner, and Nick and Lia Polizos; two sisters in Greece, Anthoula Manoliou and Alexandra Kotsovelou; and a sister, Kettie Berdanis, and brother, Gus Polizos, in Montgomery, and four step grandchildren. A Trisagion Service will be held at 7 p.m. Sun-day at the Annunciation Greek Or-thodox Church in Montgomery. Fu-neral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 31 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, followed by interment at Greenwood cemetery. Visitation will be at Leak-Memory funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, October 29.
