Wetumpka - MRS. OCIE EUNICE HENDERSON TOWNSEND, age 90, a resident of Wetumpka, Alabama died on June 9, 2018. Funeral services will be held on June 15, 2018, 11:00 AM., at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Wetumpka, Alabama with Rev. E. L. Leonard Officiating, burial will be in the Churchyard Cemetery and Hillside Memorial & Gardens Directing.

She ended her primary education at Elmore County Training School during the era of WWll. Ocie continued her education at Alabama State Teachers College ( now known as Alabama State University) but had to suspend that venture due to limited resources. After she withdrew from college, she was wedded to John Townsend (deceased), and from that union, four sons were born. Ocie later returned to college and received her BS Degree in Education from Alabama State University in 1955 and her Master's Degree in Education in 1971. In the fall of 1948, Ocie returned to her first love--teaching. She taught in the following cities and communities: Tuckabatchee, Asbury, Spring Hill, Elmore, Mt. Canaan, Eclectic, and Wallsboro. She was the first black female principal in Elmore County and she worked in the education field until her retirement in June of 1987.

She leaves to cherish her memories, a loving and devoted sister, Mrs. Mazell Townsend; four loving sons, Clinton E. Townsend, Wayne E. (Deborah) Townsend, John A. Townsend, and Lindsey R. (Valerie) Townsend; Brother in law, Ted Carter; four grandsons, three great-grandchildren, several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; devoted nieces and nephews, and a hosts of extended family and friends.
