James Rea Obituary

Dr. James F. Rea, 82, of Fort Washington, PA died on September 15, 2013. His partner of 12 years, Meredith Smith, her children and grandchildren survive him. Dr. Rea had a 50-year psychiatric career and was devoted to his patients, and often focused on matters of particular concern to women. Jim was an open-minded thinker whose most recent interest was exploring spiritual self-transformation. He loved classical and new age music. For over forty years he chronicled his life's journey. He was an avid reader and cherished his library. Jim had a passion for playing handball- until recently meeting his friends on the court. Jim had an affinity for the beauty, strength, and intelligence of wolves. He believed in the battle of the good wolf and the evil wolf inside us all, with the realization that the winning wolf is the one you feed. Throughout Jim's life he was a philanthropist and contributed generously to dozens of organizations. He believed strongly in the United States Constitution and supported many groups whose interest is in protecting it. Born in Hackensack, NJ, he was the son of James Russell Rea and Melvera Constance Harrauff Rea. Jim grew up in Bergenfield, NJ, and lived most of his adult life in Bucks and Montgomery Counties in Pennsylvania. Dr. Rea received his B.S. Degree from Bowling Green State University in 1953, and his D.O. degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1957. The American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry and The American Academy of Psychotherapists certified Dr. Rea in 1972. Dr. Rea was a member of numerous career affiliated organizations; The Theosophical Society in America; The Heritage Foundation; The Tea Party Patriots; VFW Patriots Circle; National Republican Congressional Committee; Scottish Heritage USA, Inc.; and the United States Handball Association. In addition to his partner and her family, he is survived by his brother and sister and their spouses Richard (Thelma) Rea and Marion (Wesley) Richards; his six children Elizabeth Ann Rea, Kevin (Loretta McGranaghan) Rea, Kristen (Devin) Forte, Seonaid Rea, Tracey (Scott) Yaw, Melissa Rea (Greg McFarland), and his two step-children Steven (Mimi) Myers, and Kimberly (Dan) Lippin, and nine grandchildren. A private memorial service is to be held in November. If you would like to attend please contact a family member. Memorial contributions may be made in Dr. James Rea's name to: Women's Center of Montgomery County, 880 Old York Rd., Suite 200, Elkins Park, PA 19024 or Wolf Sanctuary of PA, 465 Speedwell Forge Rd. Dr. Rea...You will never be forgotten. I would not be where I am today without your guidance, push, making me do the work, your understanding, compassion and simply being there for me at anytime. Words seem inadequate to describe you...intelligent, kind, caring, encouraging, compassionate, dedicated, and a heart beyond measure. Thank you for being there for me. You are missed.

When my husband Ray died in 2002, Jim, you sent flowers with a card that sent sympathy to me but added "Welcome home, Ray". Now it is your turn to be welcomed. Thank you for all the good memories. Love, Margie
