Jean Heinsen Cook Obituary
In loving memory of Jean Heinsen Cook, born August 27, 1920, in Evanston, Illinois. Jean passed away with her daughters by her side, Monday, July 1st at her home, Foulkeways, in Gwynedd, PA where she lived since 1997. Jean received a BA in Chemistry from Grinnell College in 1942 and an MS in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois. She was a biochemical researcher at Abbott Laboratories, Yale University and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She taught chemistry at the Pennsylvania State University, Ogontz Campus, for 22 years and was an enthusiastic volunteer at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia for 10. Jean enjoyed travelling, playing bridge, speaking French, swimming and volunteer work. She married Dr. Lawrence Greenman in 1947, had one son and two daughters. After being widowed in 1956, she married Francis W. Cook in 1959 and moved to Fort Washington, PA. The two families merged to include Francis' three children. Jean is survived by her children: Dr. Lawrence Cook, Janice Cook Schlepp and Carol Ann Solinger, stepdaughter, Carolyn Hindman, 16 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, with one more on the way. She was predeceased by her two stepsons, Richard and David Cook. She was brilliant, a pioneer among women, had a thirst for education and a passion for science. After a long and productive life, Jean will be greatly missed by her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to one of Jean's favorite charities, the American Association of University Women, P.O. Box 98045, Washington, DC 20090 or Foulkeways Hospice, 1120 Meetinghouse Road, Gwynedd, PA 19436. A Memorial Service will be held in late August at Foulkeways, Gwynedd, PA. She will be buried with her parents and sisters in Illinois.
