Otto J. Fischer of Oreland, Pennsylvania died Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Jefferson Health Hospice at Warminster. He was 87 years old. Otto was born May 13, 1930 in Güntersleben, Germany, son of the late Franz Fischer and the late Sabina Fischer (nee - Kuhn). He is the beloved husband of the late Margot L. Fischer; father of Sandy Fischer and her husband Jim Horrell, Brigitte Casey, and the late Horst Fischer; Opa of Frank Casey, Victoria and Lorelei Horrell; brother of Cilly Schneider; he is also survived by his extended family of nieces and nephews in Germany, Australia, and Arizona and his many adoring friends. Otto was born, raised, and educated in Güntersleben, Germany. Otto felt that opportunities were greater in the United States in the post-WWII era and emigrated in 1954 on the S.S. United States when he was 24. During the four day trip Otto met Marlon Brando, the actor, and beat him at ping-pong. Upon arrival in the states, Otto stayed in Staten Island, NY near his sponsor and worked at a bakery machine repair shop. After three months, he followed a better job to a printing press in Richmond, Virginia and eventually to Philadelphia where he worked making automobile parts. Otto knew Margot when they both lived in Germany. They reconnected after Margot arrived in the United States and got married. Otto struck out on his own after a few years in the auto parts business and started building houses, including the one he and Margot lived in since 1956 in Oreland. Otto joined Carpenters Union Local 1856 in Philadelphia in 1968 where he was employed until his retirement in 1992. In his free time, Otto enjoyed gardening, watching tennis on TV with Margot, and being a general handyman. His handyman work included all types of assistance to his daughters’ in the care and repair of their homes and had many creative repairs and designs. Otto was a perfectionist and took pride in his work. He was also a very generous and kind man. Always willing to help others with repairs as well. He also liked walking through the North Hills Country Club in his neighborhood and became an avid collector of golf balls and pine cones on his walks with his grand daughters. Otto was devoted to his family and enjoyed being Opa to all who knew him. Otto loved spending time with his family and especially his grand daughters. He will be missed by all who knew him. Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Saturday, December 23, 2017 from 9:30 A.M. and Funeral Mass at 10:30 A.M. at Holy Martyrs Church, 120 Allison Road, Oreland, PA 19075. His graveside service will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 3301 West Cheltenham Avenue, Cheltenham, PA 19038. Religious services will be conducted by Fr. Jason V. Kulczynski, pastor of Holy Martyrs Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Carpenter’s Club 65 c/o Tim Mullen, 15 Hampton Drive, Churchville, PA 18966.
