Hans Möller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 11 to Sep. 12, 2015.
Almost age 97, Hans died peacefully at his home on Sept. 7, 2015 in the presence of his wife Jane Yaple-Möller and step-son / care-giver Derek Yaple-Schobert. Left to mourn in Arizona, Denmark, Norway & Ontario: daughters Bodil & Lise; sons Arne (Ulla), Claus (Elisabeth) & Paul (Lorraine); grandchildren Andreas, Erik, Iben, Krista, Line, Mari, Martin (Anette) & Siri; great-grandchildren Alva, Live & Vilfred.

Born in Denmark, Dr. Möller obtained a Ph.D. in Danish Language & Literature from the University of Copenhagen & became Research Librarian at the Copenhagen Royal Library, including the department containing Hans Christian Andersen's manuscripts. During WWII, he participated in Denmark's massive saving of their Jews, i.e. secretly transporting hand grenades and illegal newspapers for the Resistance. In 1955, he came to Canada as Executive Producer at the National Film Board. In 1974, he became Chief Librarian at Ottawa University. From 1977 onwards, he worked as Librarian, Professor of Scandinavian Literature and Director of Libraries at McGill University in Montreal. He also enjoyed teaching Danish & editing scholarly books in the FONTANUS series, which he founded.

For many years, Hans served as President of the Canadian-Scandinavian Foundation (CSF), dedicating himself to raising funds to help young people in Canada travel to the Nordic countries for study or research. A donation in Hans's memory to the CSF would be deeply appreciated. http://www.thecsfoundation.com/membership/

Since Hans bequeathed his body to science at McGill, a remembrance celebration for all of Hans' friends will he held at a later date.

Knowing Hans was a privilege. I always enjoyed his lectures to the Assoc. for the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies in Canada (AASSC). He did so much to promote Scandinavian culture in Canada as manifested in his work with CSF and AASSC. He brought a warm and personal style to us. He will be missed. My heartfelt condolences to Jane and Derek.

Bonjour Derek, mes sincères condoléances pour le décès de ton père. J'ai toujours apprécié son sourire et son accessibilité. Il avait une capacité de se mettre à mon niveau quand j'étais petit, comme si on parlait d'égal à égal. x

All my sympathy.....We lost a good man we admired very much...taking the bus...loving his work.....living with a handicap without talking about it.

September 12, 2015

Dear Jane and Derek,

I am very saddened by the news of Hans' passing. I had the good fortune to know him for over 30 years. He was the consummate gentleman and scholar. My first acquaintance with him was when he was Interim Director of the McGill SIS (then the GSLS) and I was president to the GSLS students' association. He always listened to our concerns, spoke frankly and honestly with us, and acted in the best interests of both the students and the GSLS.

Years later I came to McGill to work as a librarian, and had pleasure to work with Hans as a colleague for close to 20 years. His deep and unabiding interest in the preservation and dissemination of knowledge and language was something to celebrate.

May it be a comfort to your family, as I am sure it is to Hans' many friends and colleagues, to know that he led a full and accomplished life, and that his many contributions to McGill and to society in general will endure.
