John W. Drop
LORAIN - John W. Drop, age 82, of Lorain, passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday, January 13, 2013 following an extended illness. He was born in Lorain on February 4, 1930 and remained a life-long resident of the city.
Mr. Drop was a veteran of the United States Army where he fulfilled duty assignments during the Korean Conflict as a Private First Class attached to the 47th Engineer Battalion based in Fort Riley, Kansas. He was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars as well as the Combat Infantry Badge. He was a Life Member of Amvets Post #47 of Lorain, a Social Member of Italian-American Veterans Post #1, and a Life Member of the American Slovak Club.
John was employed in a variety of capacities in the Rolling Mills at U.S. Steel Corporation's Lorain-Cuyahoga Works; he retired in 1987 following a career that spanned thirty-nine years with the steel producer.
A parishioner of the Catholic Church of St. Peter, Mr. Drop was known to many as Mr. Fix-It as he was always ready to lend a hand in repairing anything and everything that wasn't working properly. Additionally, he enjoyed working with wood, and league bowling in his free time.
He is survived by his wife of twenty-five years LaVena (nee Foy), by daughters Ellie (Joe) Stefanik of Oviedo, Fla., Anne "Dee-Dee" (Rick) Heller of Cuyahoga Falls, Janet Drop and Betty (Bob) Nunn both of Vermilion, Mary (Mark) Ksiazk of Lorain and by his son Joe (Yvonne) Drop of Fort Mohave, Ariz.. He also leaves his stepchildren Rob Rain of Port Orange, Fla., Darlene (Marvin) Blythe, Janice Zacharias, and Lisa Inge all of Elyria, as well as nine grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, and several great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Stephen and Anna (nee Vasilik) Drop, by brothers Andrew, Joseph, Paul, and Steven, by sisters Mary Kavanah, Margaret Cisarik, Veronica Nowicki, and Helen Evans, and by his step grandson Donald Zacharias.
Visitation will be Thursday from 9 a.m. until the time of closing prayers at 11 a.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 in the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Avenue. The Reverend Craig Hovanec, Pastor of the parish will officiate. Military honors conducted by Louis Paul Proy Ch. 20 of the Disabled American Veterans will conclude the services following Mass.
