AVON LAKE – Charles A. Layne, Ph.D., 72 of Avon Lake, OH and formerly of Richmond, VA and Rochester, NY passed away suddenly, Sunday, June 7, 2015. Dr. Layne was born January 5, 1943 in Selma AL and was raised in League City, TX and Jackson OH.
Charles earned his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University with his PhD in Curriculum Development and Cultural Anthropology. Prior to that he obtained his Master of Arts in Curriculum Development and Education Supervision while working in the Vandalia-Butler School District where he was a teacher and assistant principal. He also attended The Ohio State University, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Education.
After receiving his PhD, Charles accepted a position at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY. During his time there, he also worked in the Technical and Education Center for Graphic Arts. Charles founded Layne Consulting and provided training and development, and process improvement to the manufacturing community. After moving to Richmond he accepted a position as Assistant Dean/Director of Adult Studies at Averett University. He left Averett to teach math and statistics at Goochland High School for several years but would return to higher education as Director of Graduate Education for Averett University's Graduate and Professional Studies Division. In retirement he continued to mentor and advise students and others on their careers or continued education.
Charles was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Church in Richmond and Holy Spirit Church in Avon Lake and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid model railroader and a science fiction buff. He loved animals and most recently found great joy with his cat, Pete. He enjoyed playing golf, reading a good book and was an ardent fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes.
Charles is survived by his wife of 40 years, Janice P. (nee Pinter) and his brother Ottis Layne, MD (Sally) of Fredericksburg, TX. He is preceded in death by his parents Ottis and Helen (nee Ramey) Layne.
Friends may call on Saturday, June 20, from 2 and 4 PM at Busch Funeral Home, 163 Avon-Belden Rd, Avon Lake, OH with a prayer service at 4pm. Inurnment will be in early fall in the Columbarium at St. Michael Church, Richmond VA. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Friendship Animal Protective League, 8303 Murray Ridge Rd., Elyria OH 44035-4746.
