Rupert John Hoffman Obituary
Rupert John Hoffman, age 96, of Lorain, passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2019, at his daughter’s home, while under the care of Hospice of the Western Reserve. He was born on May 23, 1923, in Johnstown, PA, and is a 1942 graduate of Johnstown Catholic High School. After graduation, Rupert proudly served his country during World War II while in the United States Army. Rupert is a member of the Church of St. Peter. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and the VFW as well. He enjoyed working on jigsaw puzzles and crossword puzzles, and when he wasn’t working on those, he liked to watch old western movies on TV. Rupert looked forward to playing a good game of poker and would always make sure he had his lottery tickets. It wasn’t a surprise then, that he enjoyed watching Cash Explosion on TV. He leaves behind his beloved children, Thomas (Patricia), of Cleveland, Dennis (Shirley), of Berea, Dianne (Lewis) Hurst, of Lorain, Debora (James) Lipaj, of Doylestown, Karen (Sam) Wells, of Amherst, and Michelle (Jeffrey) Brown, of Lorain; his 12 cherished grandchildren, Amy, Jeffery, Michael, Amanda, Jonathan, Melissa, Jeffery (J.J), Alena, Jocelyn, Nathan, Alyssa, and Gabrielle; his 15 great-grandchildren, Michael, Christian, Regan, Faith, Caitlin, Courtney, Lily, Emma, Anthony, Peyton, Theo, Dexter, Olivia, Eliza, and Jay; his brother, Jim Hoffman, of Winterhaven, FL; many nieces and nephews; and all of his extended family. Rupert was preceded in death by his dear wife of 68 years, Elizabeth (nee Costlow) in 2016; parents; Albert and Anna (nee Kick) Hoffman; and his siblings, Anna, Rose, Mary, Joseph, Agnes, Charles, Betty Jane, and Leo. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 22, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m., at the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Prayers will be held on Tuesday, at 10:30 a.m., also in the funeral center. His Mass of Christian burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain. The Rev. Fr. Craig Hovanec, Pastor, will officiate. Entombment will follow Mass at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, where full military honors will be conducted by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard.
