Richard B. McElroy

1930 - 2017

Richard B. McElroy, age 87 and a resident of Lorain, passed away at his residence surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, December 10, 2017.
He was born January 27, 1930, in Zanesville to the late Frederick and Bertha (nee Teel) McElroy. Richard was a graduate of Lorain County Community College. In 1966 he relocated from Zanesville to Lorain with his family because he became employed at the former United States Steel Corporation in Lorain. For 24 years he was a machinist and for the last three years he was working in the Human Resources Division of the steel plant. He retired in 1993 after 27 years of employment.
Throughout his life Richard enjoyed camping trips with his family, fishing and hunting, and he was most proficient in the art of calligraphy.
Richard was an active member of the Lorain Lighthouse Methodist Church. In the past, he was a member of "The Steelmen's" bowling league which consisted of steelworkers from the steel mill.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 68 years, Ruth A. (nee Shumate); daughters, Sherry (Robert) Hagar of Lorain and Jane Landman of Lorain; his son, Richard McElroy of North Carolina; 17 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and his sister, Shirley McElroy of Zanesville.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his daughters, Brenda (1982), Beth (2008), and Willa Henson (2017).
There will be a celebration of Richard's life 7 p.m. Thursday at Lorain Lighthouse Methodist Church, 3015 Meister Road, Lorain. Rev. Greg Sellers will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church from 6 to 7 p.m.
