Mary Mager Obituary

Mary Barbara Mager (nee Mariotti) 92, of Amherst, passed away in peace at the Cleveland Clinic, Avon on January 3, 2021. Her daughters, Sandra and Susan were by her side.Mary was born in Lorain on August 15, 1928, daughter of Zaccario and Marie (nee Cherubini) Mariottti, of Intermesoli, Italy. Mary was the youngest of seven children. She graduated from Lorain High School class of 1946-B, where she played the saxophone in the orchestra and marching band. Mary was employed by Smith and Gerhart in Lorain and managed the jewelry and cosmetic areas of the department store. Mary married Paul S. Mager in 1950. They owned Subway Coal and Builders Supply in Lorain. Together they raised six children. The joy of Mary’s life was taking care of her family. She was a devoted mother and dedicated to each of her children, always putting them first with a strong commitment to family.Mary was an accomplished seamstress who was well known for making new outfits for each of her children throughout their school years. She was fondly remembered for sewing many new curtains for her home. Mary was president of the PTA at Holy Trinity School for many years and held various other positions. She was a parishioner at Holy Trinity Church in Lorain until its closure. Mary then returned to St. Peter Parish in Lorain where she had been baptized and married. She was a member of St. Ann’s Branch 114 of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association.Mary enjoyed astrology, casino bus trips, musicals, concerts, and hockey games. She traveled with her husband, her sister and brother in law and her daughters throughout her life. She enjoyed many places such as Hawaii, the Caribbean Islands and Italy.She leaves behind her children, Marie Mager-Prager and son, Matthew of Portland, Maine, Susan & Robert Goldstein and daughter, Rachel of Westport, Connecticut, Sandra Mager and Paulette Mager both of Amherst and Paul & Lisa Mager and daughters, Sara, Amanda, and Jessica all of Amherst; and several nieces and nephews.Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Paul S. Mager; daughter, Michele Mager; brothers, Edward, Martin and Harry Mariotti; and sisters, Thelma Mariotti, Adeline Fazekas and Elizabeth Poley.The family would like to thank Judy Flynn and the wonderful and caring staff at Avon Oaks. Mary will truly be missed by family and friends who loved her.A private mass for the immediate family was held at St. Peter Parish in Lorain. Rev. Craig Hovanec, pastor officiated. Her final resting place is at Calvary Cemetery next to her husband. The Dovin Funeral and Cremation Specialists in Lorain handled the arrangements.
