Helen Timcoe MacAllister
AGE: 98 • Bradley Beach
Helen Timcoe MacAllister, 98, of Bradley Beach, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at Care One Rehabilitation Center in Wall Township. Born June 29, 1915 to John and Julia Timcoe, Helen was a lifelong resident of Bradley Beach. Helen graduated at the top of her class from Asbury Park High School in 1933, and graduated from the New Jersey College for Women (now Douglass College). She went on to earn her Masters Degree in Chemistry from Rutgers University in 1939. She began her teaching career in 1941 as a lecturer in Microbiology and Anatomy at Monmouth Junior College (now Monmouth University), where she was the first female member of the faculty. A brilliant scientist, Helen was a true pioneer at the College. Recognizing the need for more skilled nurses during World War II, she spearheaded a partnership with local hospitals to train cadet nurses. Those who successfully completed her class remember her as a talented and caring teacher. She took immense pride in her nursing students and looked forward to the annual capping ceremony held for the new graduates. She shared her lifelong passion for science with her many students until her retirement in 1980. Helen was also a substitute teacher in the Bradley Beach Grammar School and was feared mostly by her own sons when she appeared unannounced at the front of their classrooms. Helen greatly enjoyed traveling and volunteering, engaging in current events and world affairs, and her faith. She loved her family, her home, her town, her church, and the many friends she made there over the years. Helen was a devoted parishioner of Church of the Ascension in Bradley Beach and it is believed that she was its longest continuous member. She was admired for the many leadership roles that she held in her community. Helen served as Trustee of Ascension Church, following in the footsteps of her father John. Helen served as Grand Regent of Court Ascension, Catholic Daughters of America, Chairwoman of the Board of the Bradley Beach Public Library and president of the Bradley Beach PTA. Aside from her children and grandchildren, Helen was most proud of her long association with the Bradley Beach Food Pantry and cherished the friendships she made there. As a co-founder of the Food Pantry, Helen was honored with the Service Above Self Award for her lifetime of service in June 2012 by the Rotary Club of Belmar-Wall.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 37 years, Augustus R. MacAllister Jr. She is survived by her sons and their spouses, John and Terri MacAllister of Middletown, Delaware, Randy and Mary MacAllister of Jackson, and Robert and Marjorie MacAllister of Bronxville, NY. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Jill MacAllister-Monahan of Point Pleasant, Julia Marie MacAllister of Brooklyn, NY, Kate MacAllister of Bronxville, NY, and Scott MacAllister of Washington, DC and Brian MacCallister. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Jack and Michael Monahan of Point Pleasant.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Sunrise Senior Living in Wall Township for the loving care they provided to Helen. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties will be appreciated.
Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 5 at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Ave., Ocean Grove. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 6 at the Church of The Ascension, 501 Brinley Ave., Bradley Beach, with interment following at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Neptune. Dear Bob. I am so sorry to hear about your mom. She sounds like an amazing woman. Hearing that she was a professor of nursing, a commuity activist, an amazing mother to three boys and someone who extended herself to family and friends inspires me. The fact that she was humble on top of this makes her nearly a saint. I know you will miss her, but thank God she was among us for 98 wonderful years.
Sincerely, Lisa Stephenson

Mrs. MacAllister was a class act and a good friend to my mother, Josephine Hopkins. Whenever I saw her at mass, in her later years, I would offer to walk her home or give her a ride. Her spunk and individuality never waned, despite her age, and she would politely decline my assistance. Mom and Helen were from a generation that was faith base, self reliant, and spiritual in the true sense of the word. I'm sure they're having a cup of tea together and catching up on old times. She'll remain in my prayers.

PLEASE, ACCEPT MY MOST HEARTFELT SYMPATHY ON THE PASSING OF YOUR MOTHER. HER PASSING REPRESENTS THE END OF AN ERA. MY MOTHER, HELEN LOMBARDI DeVIVO, WAS PART OF THE ORIGINAL FAMILIES OF BRADLEY BEACH. WE GREW UP AT A TIME WHEN ALL SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AND FRIENDSHIPS REVOLVED AROUND ASCENSION CHURCH, AND WHEN MONSIGNOR O'HARA, NOT THE ELECTED MAYOR, WAS THE LEADER OF THE TOWN. EVERYONE KNEW ONE ANOTHER BY NAME, IT WAS TRULY A FAMILY TOWN. WHEN I WOULD SEE MRS. MacALLISTER AT MASS, I WAS REASSURED THAT THE OLD TOWN STILL EXISTED. WITH HER PASSING SHE IS NOW COMMITTED TO ITS RICH HISTORY. MRS. Mac WAS GRACIOUS,INTELLIGENT,AND DIGNIFIED, BUT HUMBLE AND APPROCHABLE. SHE WILL TRULY BE MISSED.
DR. A. J. DeVIVO
