Todd McGovern Obituary

Todd Patrick McGovern

AGE: 38 • Allenhurst

Todd Patrick McGovern, 38, of Allenhurst, passed away in his home on Monday, Jan. 28, 2013. Born in Toms River on June 23, 1974, Todd has lived in Allenhurst for the past eight and a half years with his wife, Amanda. They married on May 8, 2004. When Todd was diagnosed with cancer on July 18, 2004, he was told he had 3-6 months to live. But Todd refused to become another statistic. He chose to live a little each day rather than die a little each day. Todd would not let his diagnosis define him; he would not let it change or break his positive spirit. Instead, he founded a non-profit called SEAS IT with his wife, Amanda to help others fighting cancer stay positive in the face of their illness. Todd embodied the very essence of SEAS IT. He lived each day with courage, strength, and love. His generous spirit, warmth, and positivity touched everyone he knew.

The consummate team player, Todd was a gifted athlete at both The Taft School in Watertown, CT and at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where he served as Captain of both the men's division 3 hockey and baseball teams. Todd's athleticism set the tone for his fight against cancer. He attacked his illness from the mindset of a fierce athlete, training his body and mind to fight by running 5Ks and marathons throughout treatment to keep his attitude positive and to raise money for SEAS IT. The Captain never stopped bringing his A-Game.

Todd's legacy will live on through the inspiration and motivation he gave everyone who knew him. Whether as a teammate, loyal friend to his close-knit "band of brothers," or the founder of SEAS IT, Todd McGovern was a true hero and leader with a gift for bringing people together for a common cause. He proudly wore SEAS IT blue in honor of the charity to which he was so dedicated. Todd loved spending time at the beach. In the summer months, he could often be found underneath an umbrella listening to his favorite sports radio. He cherished watching the sunrise while walking down the Allenhurst beach with Amanda and his constant canine companion, Kingsley. In June, he was able to celebrate the birth of his beloved twin sons. Those lucky enough to know him will be forever grateful for his kind and loving spirit.

Todd is survived by his loving wife and Co-Captain, Amanda; their twin boys, William Todd and Andrew Todd; his parents, Tom and Linda McGovern of Toms River; his sister, Susan Bowles; brother-in-law, Eugene Bowles; and nephew, Brandon Bowles of Toms River; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Chris and Ric Costanzo of Allenhurst; and his brothers-in-law, Eric and Jonathan Costanzo of Allenhurst; his nephews, Dylan and Christopher, and his niece, Madison of Allenhurst.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 at St. George's-by-the-River, Rumson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Seas It (www.seasit.org), or to The Taft School (www.taftschool.org) in Todd's name.

Todd was a role model in every sense of the term. He embodied all of the requisite qualities. I can remember pointing these out to my son, some 4 years younger, on many occasions.
Most sad of all, his 2 boys will not have the opportunity to grow up with and emulate such a wonderful man. However I´m confident that Amanda will continue to his keep his memory, values and many accomplishments alive.
Todd you were truly a one of a kind. Rest in eternal peace.

Dear Tom and Linda,
Please extend our deepest sympathies to Todd's wife Susie and the rest of the family. It has been a great sadness to learn of his passing. We will cherish our memories of happier times watching Todd grow up to become the wonderful adult he was.

I can still visualize the boys playing ball and street hockey in front of our houses on Chipmunk Court. It seems like that was an eternity ago.

Dear Amanda
We are so sorry to hear about Todd's death. We have known you for so long. It just seemed like he would always be around. We know that in our hearts and the hearts of many others. he will be.
In the eight years you were together, as husband and wife, you accomplished so much that strengthened, not only you two as a couple, but as an example for others, who are going through similar hardships. But most amazingly, you had the foresight to set a way in which William and Andrew will always be able to remember their father. They will be able to identify with SEAS IT as a legacy from him to them. The stories you will be able to tell of his strength; of continuing to exercise in hopes of helping him survive; his willingness to try any protocols that were available; and, of course, his love for you, which radiated from him to you, even if you were not physically together. These aspects of his life are amazing. Through the boys, Todd will live and through you they will remember and love.

Love,

Susan and Alan Leffler

I don't know what heroes are if they are not people like Todd and Amanda--and their families-- from the day of Todd's diagnosis. I plan to share this story of courage with my children when they are old enough to understand that even in the most overwhelming circumstances, hope and hard work can change outcomes. Our family sends condolences and love to Todd's family and his miracle sons.

My deepest sympathies go out to the McGovern family, his friends, old and new, and Todd's community. We were all so lucky to have had the honor of knowing such a great guy. May the fond memories we all have of "Gov Man" bring a smile to our face and may we crank the music when we hear a track from "Jock
Jams!"

I can still picture Gov chasing down impossible-to-get-to fly balls in center field, making it look easy with that huge grin on his face. Todd was an inspiration and leader from the moment I met him as a freshman baseball player at Colby until the last time I saw him, cheering me and the rest of the team on at a SeasIt run in Burlington, VT.

Rest in peace Gov. My deepest condolensces to Amanda, your boys, and the entire McGovern family.

With deepest sympathy to the McGovern family. Todd was a great friend and teammate at Colby. He was a born leader and had an inner confidence that let him shine in any situation. One game against Williams in which I started, my nerves must have been obvious. Gov came right over to me after warm-ups and said, "You're gonna be great and I'm going to be right there supporting you!"...and he was. All the best to Amanda and their two boys.

Mr. & Mrs. McGovern, Sue and Amanda,

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Reading all of these comments it is obvious that Todd is an inspiration to all who knew him. I remember Todd as a kid coming over to my house to hang out with my brother Mike. Always happy and always with a grin. Years later, after I moved to Florida, I skated out for the opening faceoff for a game. The opposing center is staring at me with a huge familiar grin. It took a second or two to register that it was Todd. I hadn't seen Todd in a few years to that point. When we hung out after the game it felt like we had never lost touch. One of the true "good guys." Todd will be missed by many.

My condolences,

My condolences to the entire McGovern family. Todd (Gov) was a great teammate and leader. I have so many great memories of Todd and our time together at Colby. The one that stands out most was the game against Princeton. We were considerable underdogs, obviosly, but that didnt matter to Gov. No. 21 put the team on his shoulders and carried us the entire game. After graduating, our paths didn't cross much, but it sounds like Gov continued to do the same....putting his "team" on his shoulders and perserving no matter the odds or challenges. Gov21 will live forever in all of us.

Mr & Mrs McGovern, Sue & Amanda,
You had an amazing son, brother, husband, friend, teammate & competitor. It's been far too long since I last saw Todd, but as I read all of these comments and those on Facebook, its incredible the amount of people Todd touched and the impact he had on their lives. Every childhood memory I have of Todd, whether it was hockey, baseball or just hanging out, is filled with fun, laughter and happiness. We are all blessed for having had those times with him and undoubtedly we will never meet another person like him again.

My thoughts are prayers are with you at this difficult time. RIP Todd

Dear Linda, Tom, Susan and Amanda...It was a joy to watch Todd on the hockey rink all those years ago, and it was wonderful to have the McGovern Family for neighbors. Linda and Tom, we wish we could be there if only to hug you each. Susan and your family, we wish there were words that would help you. Amanda, while we never had the opportunity to meet you, we know how loving and supportive a partner you were to Todd. Treasure those babies you and Todd joyfully brought into this world.
We are in Florida for the winter and cannot comfort you in person...but please know that we are thinking about all of you and sending you our love and our prayers.

Todd and his friends lived in my dorm basement at Colby when I was a freshman. Todd was always outgoing and kind to me, very inclusive to all, and I always remembered his genuine pleasant nature and interest in other people. We had some lovely chats in the Colby athletic training facility when prepping for our respective practices. I was so saddened to learn of his passing and his courageous battle over the past several years. My heart goes out to your family. What a lovely legacy of kindness and courage to leave to his sons.

I was playing against Todd in a Little League game (11 years old) one day. I hit a ball into shallow right field. I was certain it would be a hit. The problem was that Todd was playing first base that inning. He simply turned and ran back hard on the ball and caught the ball over his right shoulder. Turned my Texas Leaguer into an easy out. Amazing catch, amazing family, amazing man...God Bless you and your family. My deepest sympathies.
