Barry Schenk Obituary

Barry R. Schenk, M.D.

Scotch Plains - Barry R. Schenk, M.D., passed away on Thursday (April 30, 2020) at his home in Scotch Plains. Born and raised in Plainfield, he lived in Scotch Plains for over 60 years. He also built a cabin on Lake Megunticook in Camden, Maine where he spent his summers and established many close and enduring friendships.

Barry was a graduate of Plainfield High School and received his AB in Modern Language from Princeton University with a concentration in German. He graduated from NYU College of Medicine and served his residency at the VA Hospital in the Bronx. After serving as a physician in the US Air Force in Vietnam, he practiced Internal Medicine in Plainfield.

Barry was passionate about opera and was a season ticket holder to the Metropolitan Opera for many years. He served on the board of the Giulio Gari Foundation in New York City. He was also an avid bridge player and a gourmet cook who enjoyed entertaining family and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Rebecca. Surviving are his sister, Tama Singer; his nieces, Jana and Pamela; his nephew, Brad; and several cousins.

In addition to his family and friends, Barry was dedicated to the Boxers he owned and loved for many years - Ramsey, Rhett, Bacchus, Abby, Becky, Bonnie, Hansen and Barney. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Plainfield Area Humane Society, (http://pahs.org) or Best Friends Animal Society, (www.bestfriends.org).

Due to the current pandemic, services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Memorial Funeral Home in Fanwood. To leave a remembrance or to sign the guestbook, visit www.fanwoodmemorial.com.
