My friendship with Betty spans 50+ years. It began when I met her at Holmes Marshall School in Piscataway, NJ. I was a brand new 3rd grade teacher and she was an experienced special education teacher. It was a small school and we became fast friends. Over the years I have had the privilege of watching Betty work with her special children and always amazed by her patience and understanding of their needs. Her goal was always to help them become the best they could be. And she succeeded. I remember the time she planned an excursion into New York City. She wanted her children to experience many modes of transportation. They left school on the school bus, boarded the train in Plainfield, rode the ferry from Hoboken to the city, used the subway, and had lunch at Horn and Hardhart. Throughout the journey they paid for their tickets on their own and followed the schedules Betty created for them. What a day they had.
I was reminded by friends of the way Betty taught her children manners. Every day she greeted each child at the class room door with a handshake and welcome. Boys were told to remove their hats when entering the classroom. This ritual became known throughout the school. Boys were known to remove their hats as they passed her door even though they were not in her class.
She taught woodworking to both boys and girls. She had every tool imaginable and they all learned how to use them.
These are only two of the many things Betty did with her children.
Many children passed through her classroom door over the years. I know they all remember her with fondness.
I also remember the monthly meals we shared at each others house and looked forward to the wonderful cakes and pies she had for dessert. If there was any kind of event, we all knew Betty would arrive with the best dessert.
Betty was a wonderful teacher and friend and I will miss her.

Betty was a long time member of the United Church of Christ, Congregational in Plainfield. She served on every Committee and Board at one time or another and in particular was an effective Chair of the Trustees several times over. As Finance Chair and Special Events Coordinator of the Women's Fellowship Betty organized Fall and Spring Rummage Sales and a fabulous annual Christmas Fair and Dinner. She did a marvelous job of decorating the Church Hall and made inviting posters for church events and fundraisers.
Betty was a hard working member of the Plainfield Area Habitat for Humanity and volunteered for NJ Blood Services blood drives for many years.
She was a special friend and mentor to me for 43 years and I will miss her dearly.
