Michael Paul Lattimore, Sr

North Plainfield - Michael Paul Lattimore, Sr., 65, passed away August 18, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Born January 18, 1953 in New York City, NY. Michael was a resident of North Plainfield, a graduate of Plainfield High School and Rutgers College in New Brunswick. Michael joined the Plainfield Police Department in 1978, where he ascended to the rank of Captain and served as the Director of Public Affairs and Safety under three administrations for 9 years. During his 27 years of service to the City of Plainfield, he received multiple awards and commendations. After retiring in 2005, Michael became the Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police for Rutgers Newark where he served for 9 years.

Left with fond loving memories of his life, Wife; Jana, Children; Michael Jr., Janelle Gera (Varun and unborn grandchild), Julian, Lauren, Jasmine. Mother; Marie Lattimore, Brothers; Ovie (Daria), Kenneth, George (Eloise) and Rev. Rudolph Gibbs (Audrey). Sisters; Ovetta Nicholas (George), Susan Lattimore-Jackson, Marian Lattimore, Rev M. Laverne Ball and Anna Wiggs, 2 Aunts, Abigail Hardy and Marian Roberts. He also leaves a host of loving relatives and friends and his law enforcement family. Michael is predeceased by father Rev. Ovie E, brothers Everett, Norman, Franklin D. John and Ronald Lattimore, sisters Audrey Gaston-Howard and Mary Goldsboro.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 22nd at 2:00 PM at Rose of Sharon Community Church, 825 West 8th Street in Plainfield. Arrangements by Higgins Home for Funerals, Inc. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Safe Call Now, a suicide prevention foundation for addressing the mental health needs of our public safety community. www.safecallnow.org

Time waits on no one and it seems like just yesterday, I was beginning my career at the PD and learning who were our real leaders at the Department; "Mike Latt" as we called him was the shining beacon of command presence and leadership. My prayers once again go out to his family as I know each year around this time they probably think and feel even more about him. I say this with the utmost respect to his family be thankful and proud to have had a father/husband/brother and every other family title carried by this man in your family tree because although he no longer walks the earth, his legacy remains in our minds and hearts and I'm glad I got a glimpse into who he was.

I am so deeply sorry for Michael's passing. This world, and particularly Plainfield and NJ, has lost someone very special. He was a gift from God, and he will be greatly missed.

One never knows the impact one has on others. I haven't seen Michael in nearly 25 years (at my own Father's funeral), but I still considered him to be very special. Michael dated one of my older sisters during high school and college, and he always felt like a big brother to me. (I was in Ovie's class.) I don't think he ever understood how much he was appreciated and loved.

I am deeply saddened to hear of this loss to us all of this man of love and peace. He was a shining example set forth in this world by the well-respected Lattimore family. I thank you for sharing him with us all. I know I speak for all of the Smith family, including my late Parents, in expressing my deep sadness of learning of his passing, and when I say thank you for sharing the gift of Michael with us, and with Plainfield, and that Plainfield has truly lost someone very special. May Michael be safe in Heaven, and may God Bless All of Michael's Family.
