Dolores "Dee" (DeStefano) Pope

Spotswood - Dolores "Dee" (DeStefano) Pope passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at home, in the company of her family members, after a long illness. She was 71.

Dee was a 1965 graduate of South River High School. She completed her undergraduate studies at Paterson University and received a Master's Degree in Elementary Education at Rutgers University.

She taught in the South River elementary schools for 35 years and served as Team Leader. She was named Teacher of The Year in 1987, and worked for many years as Building Representative for the South River Education Association.

After retiring from teaching, she served for 12 years as Trustee and Secretary for the Spotswood Education Foundation, where she was instrumental in raising funds to support more than one hundred grants to teachers in the Spotswood schools.

She was predeceased by her mother, Mary DeStefano, in 2006, and her father, Patrick DeStefano, in 2002.

Surviving are her husband of 42 years, James; her son, Jason, and his wife, Megan, and their daughter, Dee's precious granddaughter, Charlotte, of Leesburg, VA.

Also surviving are her three brothers, Anthony and his wife, Cynthia, and Daniel and his wife, Patricia, all of Monroe Township, and Patrick and his wife, Patricia, of Spotswood, and her four sisters, Ann Byrne of Myerstown, PA, Mary Ann Strehl and her husband, Ed, of Lebanon, PA, Patricia Sanchez and her husband, Andy, of Freehold, and Roberta Dittmyre and her husband, James, of Spotswood.

She treasured a special relationship with her niece and goddaughter, Nicole Sanchez of Lake Como, who took care of her during her illness, and a wonderful relationship with her grandnephew, A.J. Dittmyre, of Spotswood.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, at 9:30 AM, at The BRUNSWICK MEMORIAL HOME, 454 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, followed by a 10:15 AM Mass of Christian Burial at Immaculate Conception Church, Spotswood. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Burial Park, South Brunswick.
