Katina Eliopoulos Obituary
Katina Eliopoulos

Asbury Park - Katina Eliopoulos, a retired seamstress and longtime resident of Asbury Park, died Sunday. She was 88.

Born in Thana, Greece, she was one of seven children born to Eleni and George Papadopoulos, and as a child worked the family farm. Katina graduated an arts and vocational school in the region's capital city of Tripolis, to become a seamstress, pattern cutter and designer.

She emigrated to Asbury Park, where she found both a vibrant Greek community and work at one the many garment factories that once lined the city's Main Street. Additionally, she created matching mother/daughter coats, wedding dresses, evening gowns and even draperies for her own clients. Shortly thereafter, she met her husband, Constantine "Gus" Eliopoulos. The couple raised two children, Christina and George, and were married until Gus's passing in 2016.

During those years, Katina worked alongside her husband in businesses on the boardwalk, and in their own family restaurant, The Laurelton Diner in Bricktown, NJ. Along with her sisters, she organized relief drives, each year sending dozens of cartons of clothing and vital supplies to Greek villagers. Katina retired in 1995, to revel in the joys of being a grandmother, gardening and her creative crafts projects.

Katina is survived by her daughter, Christina Eliopoulos Barrows and her son George Eliopoulos; her son-in-law Kenneth Barrows and daughter-in-law Jennifer Eliopoulos. Additionally, Katina is survived by her beloved grandchildren Elena and Constantinos, her sister Christina Kaldis, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 2-4 & 6-8:30 pm Thursday at the Fiore Funeral Home, 236 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst, Ocean Township. Katina was a longtime communicant at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Ocean, where her funeral service will be held at 11 am on Friday. For condolences, please visit www.fiorefuneralhomes.com.
