Raymond J. Michelli

AGE: 36 •

Raymond J. Michelli, 36, passed away peacefully Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, in Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. He was a 1995 graduate of Ocean Township High School and a 2000 graduate of Monmouth University, West Long Branch. Raymond was a remarkable young man who touched the hearts of all who knew him. He was challenged all his life with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, but he put a smile on the face of everyone he met. Despite his debilitating disease, Raymond's love was athletics. He served as a manager of the Ocean Township Football Team and was a statistician for the Monmouth University Hawk Football Team. Raymond's love for athletics was only surpassed by his love for his family: his mother, Roseann DiBiasi Michelli; father, Thomas; brother, Richard and his sister-in-law, Angela Michelli of Wayside and extra special love for his two nephews, Matthew and Christopher.

Raymond also served as an announcer for WMCX, the Monmouth U Hawks radio station as a DJ and sports commentator. He also served as the NJ Goodwill Ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association for several years. He was a parishioner of St. Anselm Roman Catholic Church and a member of the National Broadcasting Society.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10 in St. Anselm Church, 1028 Wayside Road, Wayside. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11 in the church. Entombment will follow in Woodbine Mausoleum, Oceanport. Buckley Funeral Home, 509 Second Ave., Asbury Park, is in charge of the arrangements. For those wishing to contribute to Raymond's legacy, The Raymond Michelli Scholarship Fund has been established in his honor at Monmouth University. Donations to that scholarship can be made to Monmouth University, Division of University Advancement, West Long Branch, NJ 07764-9980.

It was such a special gift to have known and to have worked with Ray at Monmouth University. And it is also a rare pleasure to know Roseann and Tom. Like so many others, I draw inspiration every day from Ray's undying positivity despite what he had to endure physically. I am especially humbled and privileged to have been part of "The Eyes of Ray," the radio story he created in my class. It is a living testimony to the strength of his spirit and the special love he carried with him every day. Rest in peace, Ray, we will miss you.

Ray was amazing. I've known him since elementary school and can remember playing with him on the playground, coming to his house for birthday parties, etc. The news of his passing is crushing, and my love and sympathy goes out to his family. Your son/brother was exceptional, and I am so touched that I was blessed to call him my friend.

I am so sorry to hear of Raymond's passing. I think back to all of the wonderful times he and my brother, John, had growing up with great fondness. Over the last 25 years or so I have thought of Raymond often and hoped he was doing well. From his obituary it sounds like he stayed involved in his passion, athletics, and accomplished some wonderful things in his life. I am grateful that he and John had such a wonderful relationship over the years. John was fortunate to be able to be a part of his life. We all were. I know John will miss Ray tremendously. Please know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. It is comforting to know that he is now free of his difficulties and is with his Father. Sending my love your way.

I can still remember playing street hockey with Ray in the cul-de-sac by his house after school, intramural floor hockey in the Marto league and him whooping my butt in ice hockey on his sega genesis. I will cherish those memories because they were times when he was the most Ray. Goodbye buddy, you will be missed.
