Surf City - Walter Mitchell Hance, 94, passed away August 5, 2018 at home. Born in Germantown, PA, he grew up in Point Pleasant, NJ. At 14 he went to work on the dock at Dale Yacht Basin, Bay Head. After graduating from Pt. Pleasant High School, he joined the Navy in 1943, serving at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba as a signal man guiding the ships through the passage to the Pacific Theater of operations in WWII. After discharge he attended Rider College and received his B.A. in Accounting. He returned to work at the Dale Yacht Basin as the accountant and later as Sales Manager. When Slade Dale sold his Yacht Basin, Walt started his own business in 1959 - Hance & Smythe with a former co-worker, Harry Smythe. Hance & Smythe is in its 59th Year and is the longest continuing Boston Whaler dealer in the country, and now world-wide. Walt served as a member of the Surf City Zoning Board for many years. Walter Hance leaves behind his wife Avis and three children, Gary, Wendy, Todd (Francie Milano-Hance) his four grandchildren Jennifer Fowler (James), Christopher T. Connors (Erin), Eric Hance and Alex Hance; and six great-grandchildren, Sean, Ian, and Noah Fowler and Riley, Rhett, and Reagan Connors. A sister, Jean Scholl (Robert) and many nieces and nephews and Loyal employees of the business who were his second family. Cremation was private and under the direction of Bugbee-Riggs Funeral Home, Ship Bottom. Contributions in memory of Walter may be made to Prader-Willi Syndrome Association or St. Jude's Hospital.
