Kathleen M. Dougherty Obituary
Kathleen M. Dougherty

AGE: 63 • Fair Haven

Kathleen M. Dougherty, 63, of Fair Haven, passed away after her year-long battle with brain cancer on December 26, 2012. After being diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme brain tumor in November of 2011, Kathy had a complete resection of the tumor and continued with follow up treatments that never stopped her from living her life to the fullest for the past thirteen months. She never gave up and would often say to the doctor, "what is the next plan?" or "keep going, let's get rid of it." Unfortunately, even Kathy's positive attitude and life-is-good outlook couldn't beat this very aggressive tumor. She fought to the very end with her high-on-life spirit and nothing less. Kathy was born in Red Bank on December 27, 1948 to Patrick and Vivian Monahan and grew up in East Keansburg. She was a lifelong resident of the shore area and after marrying her childhood sweetheart, Bob Dougherty and starting her family, they moved to a little house on a quiet street in Fair Haven where forty years of memories were made with Bob and her children, Colleen, Bryan and Andy. Kathy loved her time with family and friends, whether it be sitting on the front porch, watching or coaching a sporting event, sharing a meal around a table, sipping a glass of wine, scrapbooking photos of her most prized possession, her family, shopping from dawn to dusk, dancing at a party, volunteering at church or helping the less fortunate or homebound or most especially, sitting on the beach. Kathy was a presence. She will always be remembered as the social organizer, the life of the party, the giver, the counselor, a care-taker, the true optimist, the sunshine on a rainy day, and most of all, the best wife, mother, nanny, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend anyone could ever ask for in their lifetime. Kathy was the proud owner of her own day care facility in her Fair Haven home where she was blessed with the opportunity to care for children of all ages for the past thirty years. She was Nanny to her own grandchildren and Nanny Kathy to her daycare children because she treated them all the same. She loved every child that walked through her door like they were her own. Not a day went by that she didn't love her job. Kathy would often say how blessed she was to wake up every morning and get to go to work. She took nothing for granted and thanked God for all that she had in her life.

Kathleen is predeceased by her beloved husband Bernard in 2008 and her parents Vivian and Patrick Monahan. Kathleen is survived by her loving children Colleen Doogan and her husband Frank of Shrewsbury, Bryan and his wife Aimee of Long Branch and Andrew and his wife Jessica of Middletown. She is the dear sister of Jack Monahan and his wife Paddy and Patrick and his wife Eileen both of Belford and sister-in-law to Kevin and Mary Dougherty of Middletown. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, her angels who completed her already wonderful life, Conor, Molly, Abigail, Luke, Jack, Declan, Emma and Nate and many nieces and nephews and her companion Howard Allen. Kathy's family would like to thank family and friends who have helped to make this journey easier over this past year with their continued love and support. Her kids are most appreciative and although they will miss both their mom and dad greatly, they smile knowing they are together again holding hands and laughing, just like they always did.

A Visitation will be held at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank, NJ on Wednesday, Jan 2, 2013 from 3 to 8 PM. A Mass to celebrate Kathy's life will be Thursday, Jan 3rd at the Church of Nativity at 10 AM. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
