Mrs. Elsie "Jane" Dickman

Elsie "Jane" Dickman, 96, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2014 at Harvest View Assisted Living in Herscher.
She was born Feb. 25, 1918, the second child of Fred and Nellie (Wetzel) Becker, of Moweaqua.
Growing up on the farm she learned to care for and handle horses, to hunt, garden and run a household. After graduating from Eastern Illinois University, she taught Home Economics at Peotone High School. In the mid -1940's she began working for the Public Service Company. When electricity became available to rural residences she demonstrated the value and possibilities of electric appliances in the home.
Jane married Willard Dickman Jan. 15, 1949 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Herscher. They owned and operated a dairy and grain farm on the edge of town and raised three children. She received the Kankakee County Farm Family of the Year Award in 2013. Amongst other things, Jane enjoyed traveling, quilting, China painting, wood carving, and had many collections.
She is survived by one daughter, Theta (John) Lee, of Wellington; one son, Louis (Renee) Dickman, of Herscher; one son-in-law, Douglas Gray, of Herscher; one brother, Dean (Janet) Becker, of Moweaqua; 10 grandchildren and four great-grand children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard (1991); one daughter Betty Jane Gray (2008), two sisters and three brothers.
Visitation will be presented from 10 a.m.-noon April 5 at Trinity Lutheran Church 255 E. Third St. in Herscher. A memorial service will follow at noon at the church, with Pastor Karl Gibbs officiating.
