December 23, 1927 - March 5, 2021 McCarty, William (Bill) Reid, 93, of Lindsay, passed away March 5, 2021 at Ross Memorial Hospital. Predeceased by his amazing wife Allison, and survived by his daughter Cathie Hawery, sons Michael (Sam), Paul (Rita); grandchildren Jodie Hood (Gerald), Shane Hawery (Tara), TJ McCarty (Tina), Gray McCarty, Haylen Short (Henry), Jake and Jeremy McCarty (Brit); and great-grandchildren Jaxson and Lauren Hood, and Carter and Logan Hawery. He died like he lived - peacefully, with little fuss, and his favorite jazz playing in the background. Full of humour, highly observant and well-read to the end, he could talk with anybody about anything. After high school Bill joined the family business and ran McCarty's Jewellers until he retired at 55 on the hundredth anniversary of the store. His lifelong passion was jazz (Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Artie Shaw), drums, and great jazz drummers (Norm Villeneuve). There is nothing he enjoyed more than playing in his band for residents of the nursing homes, where he claimed "they measured the success of the gig by how many people stayed awake". He enjoyed curling, and loved to golf, especially with his grandchildren. Neither the pandemic nor winter could keep him from swinging a golf club and he developed an indoor technique chipping balls into the open oven. Mom must be fuming in heaven. After Allison passed away in 2010, Dad was a bit lost but eventually poured himself into two hobbies - building model planes, and digging up old family photos. Proudly independent to the end, he gave up driving on his own terms, and lived by himself in his own home. Cremation has taken place, and due to the pandemic, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. If desired, memorial donations to the Ross Memorial Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family. Donations and condolences may be made through the Mackey Funeral Home, 33 Peel Street, Lindsay or online at www.mackeys.ca (705-328-2721)
