Aaron Andrew Karcher of Carolina Beach passed away unexpectedly on November 9, 2023. He was 45. Loreen Waterman (Jonas) of Sparks, Nevada and Guy Karcher (Susan) of Webster, North Carolina welcomed their son into the world on April 3, 1978 in Reno, Nevada.
He is survived by his wife and soulmate, Calleen Freeburg Karcher; their adored and cherished daughter Madeline Karcher; and their treasured dogs, Sunny Boy and Minxy (Nellie). He is survived by his parents, as well as his paternal grandmother, Carol Karcher Kerns of Stafford, Virginia and his father-in-law, Kenneth Freeburg, of the home.
Aaron is also survived by his seven siblings: His brother Sean Karcher (Natalie) of Trondheim, Norway; his sister Sarah McGill (Kevin) of Sparks, N.V; his step-sister Melissa Collins Gut (Peter) of Charlotte, N.C.; his step-brother Ernest Collins of Webster, N.C.; his half-sister Kaitlyn Karcher of Washington, D.C.; his brother-in-law James Kruse (Robin) of Spencer, Iowa; and his sister-in-law Colleen Raulerson (Michael) of Hendersonville, N.C.
Uncle Aaron was adored by his 13 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, JoAnne Freeburg; maternal grandparents, Robert and Claudette Kahman; and his paternal grandfather, Gerald Denis Karcher.
Aaron grew up in Reno, N.V., where he attended Reed High School. He spent much of his young adult life in western North Carolina and graduated with his GED from Southwestern Community College in Sylva, N.C. He later obtained his degree in Cosmetology from Haywood Community College in 2007.
In 2008, Aaron married his wife Calleen, and in 2009, their daughter Madeline (or Slim, as Aaron called her) was born. Already a great big brother and uncle, Aaron loved being a dad and his time with Maddy over the following fourteen years was filled with great memories, whether it was sledding, jumping in the pool, visiting cousins, fishing on the beach, or Aaron building her something special.
Aaron was a talented and sought-after hair stylist in Asheville, N.C. for many years, but was also immensely talented and found a true calling in painting and construction. Regardless of his occupation, Aaron was endlessly generous with his talent and skills, whether that was a new haircut for his little sister, laying down new floors for his parents, or renovating his daughter’s room. Giving generously of his time and talent, he helped his parents, his extended family and many friends with home projects and home makeovers. Aaron remodeled seven houses for his family, in addition to many smaller projects.
He was known for being incredibly hard working, honest and dependable. Aaron’s generosity was not limited to his learned skills - he was also immensely generous with his laughter, acceptance of others, and his time with friends and family. His family will forever treasure memories of fishing, watching football, beach days and boat days, big family vacations, movie marathons and great dinners - but also the welcome trip to Taco Bell.
Aaron was down-to-earth and grateful for all that he had: he had lived his perfect day many times over with his wife, daughter, and dogs, enjoying great weather and strong coffee at Carolina Beach. His positive outlook, easygoing nature and daily gratitude were admired by all who knew him. If you pictured Aaron in your mind, he would be smiling, as he always was when you were with him. He leaves behind so many friends that are heartbroken with his passing.
A Funeral Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at The Basilica of Saint Mary in Wilmington, N.C. at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 17, 2023. The family will receive friends at a Celebration of Life following the Funeral Mass. A private final resting place will be arranged at a future time.
In lieu of flowers, Aaron’s family asks that a donation be made in Aaron’s loving memory to Madeline's college fund.

My husband and I considered Aaron a part of our family. We met him shortly after he moved to Wilmington and there was an instant connection. He was such a positive presence and I can hear his laugh in my mind as soon as I think of him. His absence on Earth will leave a permanent hole in our hearts. The countless memories will keep us afloat until we meet again. Sending all of his family and friends are deepest condolences.

Aaron was so incredibly loved by all who knew him. I’m one of his aunts, and he loved all his aunts so much! I saw him last at my mom’s (his grandmother’s) memorial in May of this year. I had no idea it would be the last time I would see him. I am incredibly sad and pray for his wife, daughter, mom and dad, and his siblings, as well as so many that loved him, family and friends. He will be missed so much.

I had the privilege of knowing Aaron when he’s was just a kid in van nuys California. A couple of stories to share- my wife once babysat Aaron and she told me yesterday he was watching tv and just got up and climbed into his crib. Easiest babysitting job she can remember. My mom and I lived downstairs from Guy and his family..Aaron was her favorite guest. We didn’t have much but my mom used to feed him so he got used to stopping by. One day he was rewarded with a whole bag of grapes and ate...

Aaron you have always been so full of love and the way you loved your wife and daughter showed in the twinkle of your eyes when you talked about them. You will be dearly missed.
