Albertina Sisulu

Obituary

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) - Albertina Sisulu, a veteran of the anti-apartheid movement who was married to Nelson Mandela's mentor, has died. She was 92.

African National Congress spokesman Brian Sokutu, confirming the death Thursday, said Sisulu "dedicated all her life to the ANC and to the defeat of apartheid and ushering in of constitutional democracy in South Africa."

Walter Sisulu, who died in 2003, spent 25 years in custody on Robben Island alongside Mandela, whom he had brought into the ANC. Albertina Sisulu was left behind to raise the couple's five children. She also spent months in jail herself and had her movements restricted.

Not sure what to say?

MaSisulu's passing leaves a rent in the fabric of South African society. She and her generation of leaders inspired a movement and generations that followed. We must strive to take forward the values that she held so dear, and not allow the vision that she embodied to become obscured by complacency, superficial ambition and materialism. We mourn with the nation and offer our condolences to the family and loved ones of this great leader. Lewis and Beatrice Rabkin
