Alice Martha Harris

NEWTON - Alice Martha Harris, 96, of Newton, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017, at Newton Medical Center.
Born in Newton, Alice was raised in Hampton Township and had been a resident of Newton for 50 years. She was a 1937 graduate of Newton High School. Alice was a secretary at Sussex County Technical School in Sparta for 21 years before her retirement in December of 1991. A member of the First United Methodist Church of Newton, Alice was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Newton Fire Department.
The daughter of the late Harry Ogden Brooks and Carrie (Roof) Brooks, Alice was also predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Herbert William Harris, on June 23, 1997; her brothers, William, George and Harry; and her sisters, Dorothy, Marian, Adelaide and Mildred. She is survived by her sons, William Harris and wife, Darcy, and Stephen Harris and wife, Wendy; her grandchildren, Abigail McCann and husband, Michael, Matthew Harris and wife, Maria, and their son, Lucas, Justin Harris, Chad Harris, and Austin Harris. She is also survived by her sister, Elsie Reed and her husband, Harry.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, from 2 to 3 p.m., at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton, followed by a 3:30 p.m. service at Newton Cemetery Mausoleum.
