Beckett-Brown & Hodges Funeral Home - Philadelphia Obituary

Amiel Duan Holmes was born June 30, 1979 to Doreen Burrell and Dwayne Holmes.  He entered peacefully into eternal rest September 3, 2019.  Duan, as he was known to all his relatives and friends, was a graduate of Wissahickon High School.  He was a member of the football team, where he excelled as a running back and linebacker.  His love of football went beyond high school to Wesley College, as well as a defensive tackle and fullback for the Conshohocken Steelers, a semi-pro football team.

He spent most of his professional life in the culinary industry.  He enjoyed creating music and new recipes.  The primary love of his life was fishing!

Duan was a respectable, well-mannered young man with a warm, kind soul.  He was a mentor to many friends and young people everywhere he went.  His Mom always said when he was young, “He was like a bull in a china shop”. But he grew into a gentle giant.

Duan would always jokingly say “I’m strong like a bull” but he was more like a teddy bear

Duan was proceeded in death by his younger sister Dionna Lynn Holmes and paternal grandfather John Holmes, Sr.  He leaves to cherish his memory, his parents, Doreen Burrell (Sam) and Dwayne Holmes (Sue); his sister Denee (Phil) of Maui; Jackie (Will) of North Carolina and Toni of Pennsylania.  His grandparents, Tertia Holmes, Lucille Sloan (George) and Percy (Francis). His nieces Amia and Salah and nephews Ezra and Tristan.  His long-time companion Carla and her children Amira, Jaden and Zachary; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

We the family, wish to acknowledge with gratefulness, the many comforting messages, prayers, and other kind expressions of sympathy and concern shown to us in our time of grief.  May God bless you.

When tomorrow starts without me and I am not there to see,

If they should find your eyes filled with tears for me.

I wish so much you wouldn’t cry the way you did today

While thinking of the many things we didn’t get to say

I know how you loved me as much I love you,

And each time that you think of me I know you will miss me too.

But when tomorrow starts without me, please try to understand

That an angel came and called my name and took me by the hand.

Doreen Dwayne and family:

I am having flashbacks of Duan as a child, all funny all happy and he really was like a bull in a china store at times, but one look in his eyes and all u saw was a gentleness and a true kindness that he carried into adulthood, everyone he meant loved and respected him because he was so obviously genuine.
