Arthur Emmitt Atkins Sr., 80, of Waynesboro, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2011, at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 19, 1931, in Beechgrove, Virginia, a son of the late Walter Ashby Atkins and Lacy Idell Fitzgerald Atkins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Atkins; brother, Roosevelt Atkins; son, Dale Fitzgerald; and daughter, Diane Painter. He was a carpenter, and worked for Draft Builders until his health declined. He was a follower of Jesus Christ, and loved to read the Bible. He never met a stranger. Surviving are his children, sons, Arthur Atkins Jr. and his wife, Wanda, Gary Fitzgerald and his wife, Amy, Steve Fitzgerald and his wife, Cheryl, Tommy Fitzgerald and wife, Dana; daughters, Lisa Phillips and husband, Marvin, Tina Meadows and husband, Allen, Vickie Snell and husband, Bill, and Beth H. Fitzgerald; daughter-in-law, Jackie Fitzgerald; and son-in-law, Donnie Painter. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren, including special grandson, Curtis Floyd; numerous great-grandchildren; and a special friend and caregiver, Dana Blackwell. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, November 3, 2011, at Gospel Light Baptist Church by Pastor Kevin Hall. Burial will be private at Riverview Cemetery.
