Arthur Emmitt Atkins Sr., 80, of Waynesboro, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2011, at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 19, 1931, in Beechgrove, Virginia, a son of the late Walter Ashby Atkins and Lacy Idell Fitzgerald Atkins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Atkins; brother, Roosevelt Atkins; son, Dale Fitzgerald; and daughter, Diane Painter. He was a carpenter, and worked for Draft Builders until his health declined. He was a follower of Jesus Christ, and loved to read the Bible. He never met a stranger. Surviving are his children, sons, Arthur Atkins Jr. and his wife, Wanda, Gary Fitzgerald and his wife, Amy, Steve Fitzgerald and his wife, Cheryl, Tommy Fitzgerald and wife, Dana; daughters, Lisa Phillips and husband, Marvin, Tina Meadows and husband, Allen, Vickie Snell and husband, Bill, and Beth H. Fitzgerald; daughter-in-law, Jackie Fitzgerald; and son-in-law, Donnie Painter. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren, including special grandson, Curtis Floyd; numerous great-grandchildren; and a special friend and caregiver, Dana Blackwell. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, November 3, 2011, at Gospel Light Baptist Church by Pastor Kevin Hall. Burial will be private at Riverview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gospel Light Baptist Church, c/o Floyd Shifflett, 391 Rockfish Road, Waynesboro, VA 22980; or, Smokey Wilson Ministries, 279 Farm Meadow Road, Concord, VA 24538. McDow Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

My prayers are with the family! Arthur was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed by all that knew him. I pray that God will be with each one of you and give you the strength to get through the days, weeks and months to come. Put your faith and God he will see you through. My thoughts are with the family. I'll definitely miss waving at him as he sat on his front porch in his rocker. I miss being his neighbor, too. He was a very nice man. And will be missed.
