Ava Helen Whitehair, 96, died March 20, 2011 at Salem Care and Rehab Center in Salem, WV. She was born June 4, 1914, at New Milton, WV, the second daughter of the late Eugene and Delphia Cox Dillon. As a young woman, she worked on neighboring farms as a mother's helper. She married Arthur Dale Whitehair in 1941; they moved to Akron, OH, in 1950, returning to New Milton in 1970. She was a faithful member of the Indian Fork Baptist Church and the Union Mission Church for many years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Currydale Club. One of her fondest memories was her role as Doddridge County Belle. She liked to travel, especially by train, and she was interested in family history, and looked forward to family reunions. Quilting was her passion and many friends and relations received a gift of her hand-stitched quilts. In later years, she was an ardent fan of the WV Mountaineers. Surviving are one son, Elton Whitehair (Judy) of New Milton, two daughters, Helen (Richard) Lowther of Tacoma, WA, and Lydinne (Howard) Smith Ravenna, OH, stepdaughter, Mary Jane Willis (Bill) of Akron, OH; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, one brother, Robert Dillon of Strasburg, OH, and sister-in-law, Edna Dillon of Dover, OH, many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband who died in 1980, she was preceded in death by a stepdaughter Waneta Kelley, sister Hazel Squires, brother, Pete Dillon, two grandsons and two granddaughters. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at 1:00 PM, at the McCullough-Rogers Funeral Home in Pennsboro, WV, with the Rev. Kermit Lanham officiating. Interment to follow at the Sunrise Union Mission Cemetery, New Milton, WV. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 until 6PM on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, and after 9 AM on the day of the service.
