Barbara Ann (Potier) Grzebien Grey of Lee, N. H. and Nantucket MA, died on Saturday, January 20, 2007 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a long battle with kidney disease. She was born in Providence, R.I. on Easter Sunday, April 20, 1930. She was 76 years old. Barbara attended Cranston High School and received her degree from LaSalle college in Newton MA where she majored in Fashion and Marketing. She married John Grzebien Grey in 1951 and together they owned Miss Lally’s Town and Travel, a ladies sportswear shop on Narragansett Pier for seven years. In 1974 the family moved Nantucket Island and Barbara embarked on several careers including managing the Pantry Shelf-a gourmet shop, managing a dental office and finally becoming a real estate broker with several firms on the island. Barbara was a dynamic mother, cultivating the families passion for people, food, travel, nature and politics. She founded the Chatham Village RI Garden Club, she was the Past President of the Republican Women’s Association, Past President of the Nantucket Women’s association, a member of Amnesty International, a member of the RI Civic Choral, Secretary for the Center for Elder Affairs. When Barbara decided to semi-retire she became a tourist information representative for the Nantucket Visitors Service, allowing her to remain connected to the thing she loved most; people. In 2003, when she was diagnosed with kidney disease, she moved to Lee NH to live with her children. She was a world traveler, an avid reader, a craftsperson, a competitive scrabble player and a gregarious and devoted friend. Barbara’s gracious spirit will continue to dwell in all who knew her. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law; John L. Grey and Paula Grey of Wakefield, R.I., her son, D. Jeffrey Grey of Quincy, MA, daughter-in-law, Susan Grey of Nantucket, daughter and son-in-law, Hillary L. Myers and James Myers of Lee, N.H. and two grandsons; Taylor A. Grey and Cameron J. Grey of Nantucket, Mass. She was predeceased by her parents George F. and Frances M. Potier and her sister, Priscilla van Loon.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm at the Lee Church Congregational, 17 Mast Rd in Lee, N.H. on February 3rd, 2007. A memorial service on Nantucket is planned for June. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made in Barbara’s memory to your local Hospice program, the Lee Church Congregational- 17 Mast Rd Lee NH or (Nurses’) Fund at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, Central Avenue, Dover NH.
