Evans Funeral Home - Florala Obituary

Barbara Sightler Watson, a long-time resident of Florala, passed away in her home on September 29, 2021, following a battle with cancer.
Barbara was born on June 10th, 1935, in Lockhart, AL. She was preceded in death by her parents Carl Duncan Sightler and Annie Josey Sightler of
Lockhart; infant son Kenneth Ray Watson; brother Dewitt Sightler Sr.; sisters Mary Geohagan, Sara Gamble, Annie Lou Windham, Jean Wilson
and Janet O’Brien; nephews Perry Dewayne Sightler and Michael O’Brien; and niece Alice Ann Brewer. She is survived by nephews Carl Sightler,
Dewitt Sightler Jr., Steve Windham, Gary Jones, Perry O’Brien, Donnie Gamble and Ronnie Gamble; and nieces Peggy Davenport and Terri
O’Brien; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Barbara had a very successful career with Liberty National Life Insurance Company; however her career was cut short by an automobile accident injury. Although her injury limited her mobility, it never affected her determination to live as independently as possible. With the aid
of a wheel-chair accessible van, she was able to continue driving herself to appointments and to enjoy short shopping trips until the last few
years of her life. With the assistance of her devoted nephews Steve Windham, who became her primary caretaker, and Carl and Dewitt Sightler,
who drove her to appointments and took care of many needs, she was able to fulfill her wish to spend her final years in her own home.
Barbara loved her custom-built lake house, which featured her own personal touches and allowed her to enjoy a beautiful view of Lake Jackson.
She had great compassion for animals and was an avid supporter of animal rescue organizations. Throughout her life she especially loved dogs,
leaving behind, Bella and Rex, her most recent fur babies. Caring for them them as if they were her own children, she provided instructions for
their continued care following her death.

The family wants to recognize some who helped and cared for Barbara over the last few years. First and foremost, our heartfelt thanks and
appreciation to Steve Windham, Barbara’s next-door nephew, who she relied on daily to take care of any problems or needs. Thanks to Wil ma
Barton, Barbara’s dear, life-long friend, who was always there when needed. Thank you Janet Busbee Lanpher  for taking time to reminisce with Barbara
about your mother, Eva Rae Busbee, a life-long friend who preceded Barbara in death. Others who Barbara often mentioned included Jean
Norris, who she often relied on for help, and Becky Distassio, who visited often and brought cheer into her life. And finally, a special thank you
to the Hospice nurses and to Becky Booker and her daughter Holly Woodham who showed so much compassion in their care of Barbara (and
her little dogs) as she transitioned from this life to the next.

Funeral arrangements will be handled by Evans Funeral Home. The service will be conducted on Wednesday October 6, 2021. Viewing will be
from 1 – 2 PM with the service commencing at 2PM. Graveside service will follow at the Judson Cemetery.

Not sure what to say?

My Deepest Sympathy to Barbara's family.
She was a dear and loving lady and it was a privilege to call her a friend.

My heartfelt sympathy to all of the family for the loss of Barbara. She was a very independent lady who did not want to be a burden on anyone, but was truly thankful to have family and friends assist her when she came to this point in her life. I will treasure the friendship I had with Barbara. May God comfort you all during this said time. God Bless.
