BARBARA WELCH Obituary
BARBARA SHAW WELCH (Age 87)
Longtime resident of Alexandria VA, passed peacefully on Tuesday February 11, 2014. Loving mother of Douglas, Rick, Tom and Mary she was an exceptionally devoted grandmother to her seven grandchildren: Conor, Devin, Katherine, Andrew, Sam, Joe and Marco. Raised in Nutley, NJ, and a graduate of Duke University, she was a loving wife to Samuel C. Welch of Waynesville, NC until his death in 1969. For 17 years she taught at the Alexandria Hospital School of Nursing. Besides her devotion to her family she was a popular presence in the Waynewood community and the Stratford Women's Club. A dear friend to so many, her smile, sense of humor, her strength and positive outlook were cherished by all who knew her. A funeral Mass will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, February 14 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Mt. Vernon VA with a viewing in the hour beforehand. She will be buried on Monday, next to her husband, in Waynesville, NC.

To the Welch family, Your Mom was a great teacher & loved being a nurse. As one of her students at AHSN, I learned the most needed skills for my 35 year success as a Registered Nurse from your Mom! She was a great lady! God be with each of you in giving you comfort during this time.

Doug, Rick, Mary and Tom ~ My heartfelt condolences on the passing of your mother. You all know how special she was to me, and to our family. The memories are countless, and deeply cherished -- and I'm extremely grateful I had the opportunity to see her summer before last. Her sweet smile, twinkling eyes, infectious laugh, sage (though sometimes painful!) advice, and unconditional love will be truly missed. She was one of a kind, and I thank you all for "sharing" her with so many. My life is certainly richer as a result. May your faith and memories sustain you at this difficult time. Love to all.
