BARRY GLASS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 21, 2013.
To know Barry was to love him. Just ask anyone. On August 15th 1939 he was born to Myer and Mirion Glass in Cambridge Massachusetts. In his short time on earth Barry not only accomplished an unbelievable amount but he touched everyone that he met. Barry grew as part of a modes family but was determined to make a better life for himself.
In 1962 Barry graduated from North Eastern University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. Even at a young age he knew exactly what he wanted to do. Barry, not being a person who ever just settled, went on and attended both Boston University and Lowell Tech where he earned two master's degrees, one in Business Administration and another in Nuclear Engineering. During this time he also was an Army 1st Lieutenant from 1963 to 1968 at which point he was honorably discharged.
On January 21st 1968 he married Joan Kesselman. They had their first child, Michael, two years later and in 1973 they had their second child, David. Barry was working for Sanders and living in Nashua, New Hampshire. Always striving to achieve more and ready for new opportunities, in 1980 Barry accepted a job across the country in California for Rockwell International. Once again he knew exactly what he wanted to do. Rockwell was eventually taken over by Boeing, where he worked right up to the end. He could have retired years ago but that was not the life for him. He loved work almost as much as his family. He was passionate about his career. It seemed he was always traveling for work. I believe that he was more comfortable on a plane than anywhere else.
Barry was a very devoted person, especially when it came to his family. He was a man of few words but his actions said it all. As his son I could not have asked for a better dad or a better role model. One example of his devotion that stands out to me is from when we lived in Virginia, Dad would wake up at 3AM every weekend to drive me and my brother to hockey practice which started at 4:45AM. The ice rink was an hour away and most of the roads were covered in snow. He was always there for us, as kids and adults. In recent years he enjoyed being an active and involved grandfather for his three grandchildren: Amber, Matthew and Jillian. Never tiring, at 74 years old he had the energy to keep up with them and some to spare.
Barry's devotion to his family, and especially his wife, Joan, truly came out at the end. Even knowing that his time was extremely limited his only focus was making sure that Joan would be taken care of once he was gone. After the doctors gave him the news that his days were coming to a close, he called David and had him drive down to the hospital, where in typical engineer fashion he had a list prepared of things that needed to be done for Joan. Since he was first diagnosed on July 3rd to the day that he passed and went on to a better place, Barry never let the cancer control him. He took control, made his lists, got all his affairs in order, and was at peace on his final day. It was way too early for us to lose him, but he went out with more dignity that I could have ever imagined.
Barry was a man of actions, not words. Actions that continuously showed his wife, sons, and grandkids how much he loved them. Actions that demonstrated to his fellow Boeing employees, friends and extended family his dedication, kindness, integrity and thoughtfulness. We will feel a tremendous void in our daily life without Dad, but we will always have him in our heart. He will forever be loved and missed, and we will find comfort in happy memories of him and in knowing he is watching over us.

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Barry for over ten years through tradeshow collaborations, and was saddened to hear of his passing through a colleague of his. When it came to tradeshows we could always count on Barry for support (and humor!). Barry was a true friend and gentleman who will be greatly missed.

Barry Glass learned sales and marketing "the right way" and he always did his homework to support the technical staff. He worked hard winning many programs for Boeing and continued to be on the road to keep our programs sold. I remember many Italian dinners on sales trips with him, and even some dinners with Barry and you, Joan, at various MILCOM events. He was always quick to help our team. His absence is already sorely felt at Boeing but certainly even harder for your family. I wish you peace through this difficult time and I continue to pray for your healing so you can walk again and enjoy your family. God bless you all.

I enjoyed knowing Barry so much - I really only ever saw him when he was traveling and stopped into our office, but he was one of those very rare colleagues that I was always happy to see, even if it was just for an afternoon every other month or so! I was so sorry to hear of his passing last week; he was an admired colleague and just a good guy all around. My deepest condolences to the Glass family.

I have known Joan and Barry for approximately sixty years as she was my upstairs neighbor and Barry and I attended Northeastern University. I recall just sitting on the steps of our three decker and talking endlessly with Barry and those going by. Lots of laughing and studying til 3:00a.m. He has great kids and grandchildren as he was always a good role model for them you can see the love for his family in the pictures. It is obvious he was a loving grandpa and loved by all. He will be sorely missed. Love to all the B.g. Family.

Barry is one of my favorite people that I have had the pleasure of working with over the past 30 years. We often used to have morning coffee together to discuss solving the world's problems. Barry always had a way of making you feel that he was there to help you no matter what. We miss him greatly. God bless your family.

Barry will be sorely missed because he was always able to make every day more interesting and fun. Having gone on a few "marketing" trips with him over the years, I came to appreciate his professional talent as well as his special personality. From very cold calls with customers, his Junior Contract Administrator delegation, to flying home cross country with fish for his restaurant, Barry was always a "unique" treasure and we will miss him very much.

I first met Barry while working on the a US Navy program for DDG-51 Class ships in 2003. Whenever he came to town or when in California we would always find time to get together to talk about families and the important things of life. Barry loved to share his knowledge, expertise, and contacts to help others learn the art of Business Development.

Barry, my life has been enriched by your friendship. I will miss our dinners at RT's and Ted's. Rest easy my friend for you are now healed. To his family may God's blessing be with during this time of loss but know that he is now sitting on cloud smiling down at you.

Sharon and I knew Barry as a great individual who could always make us laugh and had a good story for every occasion. As a Business Development professional, he was always willing to help anyone learn the art of business development. We will miss his dry humor and his sharp wit. I was very saddened by this news today. Barry was a fantastic person to work with during my career at Rockwell and Boeing in Anaheim. On business trips he would always go out of his way to make the trips most enjoyable for all and kept the business side completely professional. He will be sorely missed!

Barry was a true class act and a great guy with a big heart. Have so many fond memories of the times we spent together at work and on travel. His knowledge and experience in the field were second to none. Anyone who knew him was sure to learn something. The last time I saw Barry was in Hawaii last Winter. We talked for over an hour about the good old days and how lucky we have been over the years to have so many great experiences. We are all truly blessed to have known him. He will be missed.

Barry was certainly first class in his work; I've never known a more professional and experienced business development person. But it was Barry's interest in sharing himself with his fellow workers that made him unique and expanded his contributions beyond himself. RIP Barry

I prefer to share memories.
When I first met Barry he was living with his mother and father on Fottler Rd ,Mattapan. I can still remember them as a family. We also spent a lot of time at the home of Barry Shanler on Baird st, Dorchester, especially Barry. Oh yes the little kid who lived in the upstairs apartment, became the future Joan Glass.
We got engaged the same weekend and were married a month apart.

Eventually our careers brought us both to VA, where we shared a lot of family time together, his boys and my daughter, time passed and we stayed in contact .He moved to CA and I moved to a different home ,where I was living with my granddaughter, she was always happy when uncle Barry would visit. She would crawl up on his belly, put her arms around him, thus began his grandparenting 101, dreaming of having his own grandchild on his belly.

I am sure that when his grandchild assumed this position he was hooked for life.

Memories are for life and then some.

My family will never forget the time shared with uncle Barry.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss, and although we were only acquaintances through our employment I felt deep sadness as soon as I heard. Barry was a terrific person to work with. Focused. Professional. Witty. I cherished the times we could work together. My thoughts and the thoughts of many are with you at this time of sorrow.

I am a neighbor of Barry's son Michael and I was fortunate to get to know him as a loving, devoted grandfather. I have watched him create many, many special memories with his grandkids over the years, picking up the kids to go to the movies, making sure he attended ballet recitals, easter egg hunts, 4th of July parades, taking them to their favorite breakfast place for weekend bagels. His love for family was inspirational and his presence will be sorely missed.

It has been a real pleasure to have known and worked with Barry over the past decade. Barry seemed to have boundless energy and enthusiasm for his work. Barry was a man of great character with a big heart and big smile. I shall miss him. My sincere condolences to the Glass family.

I know we are all feeling very sad, that we've lost our Grandpa, our friend and our dad. Together we have cried an ocean of tears as we feel so empty and hold many fears. But Grandpa would want us know he's in a good place and that he's watching us all with a smile on his face.
We'll Forever Miss You! Love, Alba & Family
