It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Mother Betty C. Lewis (96), on Monday, October 12, 2020, at Effingham Care Center. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Celebration of Life Memorial will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2020, at 2:00 P.M. at Church of the Harvest, 434 Wisenbaker Rd, Rincon, GA 31326.  Smalls Funeral Home Inc. Betty Mae Lewis was born to the union of the late Murray Cowan and Flora Banks Cowan on November 21, 1923, in Elizabethtown, North Carolina. She was the oldest of 12 children.


Betty attended Bladen County Schools and graduated from Bladen County High School in North Carolina.  On August 9, 1948, she was united in marriage to Newton Lewis, who preceded her in death. They were married thirty-two years. She spent most of her life in Cleveland, Ohio. Later relocating to Pensacola Fl. Betty lived the remainder of her life in Rincon, Ga.


She confessed Christ at an early age. When she relocated to Georgia, she joined First Union Missionary Baptist Church under the Pastorate of her nephew Bishop Franklin D. Blanks, Jr., and her niece Overseer Dr. Stephanie Blanks. Upon leaving First Union she moved her membership to New Jerusalem Christian Church of Rincon, Ga. Bishop Franklin D. Blanks, Jr., and Overseer Dr. Stephanie Blanks again served as her Pastors. Betty loved Sunday School, Bible Study, attending Church, and women’s conferences. Betty would say, “I am working on myself to make it into heaven”. 


Betty is preceded in death by her parents and siblings; Marjorie (Moore) Marks, Flora Melvin, Macy Dixon, Amos Cowan, William Cowan, Murray Cowan Jr. Sante Cowan, and Bartiaeus Cowan.


Those who are left to cherish her memories include her sisters, Valtona Johnson of Fayetteville, North Carolina and Leeatta Jones of Providence, Rhode Island, and one brother Benjamin Cowan of Fayetteville, North Carolina.  She has and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.


Betty has three special nieces Stephanie (Franklin) Blanks of Rincon, Georgia.  Yolanda (Donald) Belcher of Pensacola, Florida, Tameka Huggins of Cleveland, Ohio, and a great-niece Kaylee Beasley of Pensacola, Florida. During Betty’s lifetime, she was blessed to have some special friends, Harry Simpson of Cleveland, Ohio, Grace Green of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Lillian Roberts of Red Bank, New Jersey.
