Theodore “Ted” McMillin, age 92, of Clintonville (formerly Chicago) passed away Wednesday morning, October 28, 2020 at ThedaCare Medical Center, Shawano, after a brief battle with the COVID-19 virus.

Theodore Sherman McMillin was born on October 14, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois, to Andrew and Maren (Nelson) McMillin. In 1946 he graduated from Roosevelt High School in Chicago. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps infantry right out of High School, serving overseas and later on an aircraft carrier as an MP. Ted was united in marriage on December 9, 1949 to Bette Kuk at Bethesda Lutheran Church, Chicago.

In the late 1950’s he was hired as a Chicago police officer. In addition to patrol, in 1960 he became a part of the Chicago Police Department Marine Unit where he patrolled the waters of Lake Michigan and became one of the departments early scuba divers doing search and rescue. He went on to become a detective at Area 6 in the stolen auto division, where he was also stationed with his brother in law, Detective Herman Kuk.

In 1968 Ted was detailed to the Chicago democratic national convention riots. He was also involved in the Chicago 7 trial and was recognized by federal prosecutors for his testimony in the arrest and trial of Abbie Hoffman. In 1972 Ted assisted the FBI in executing a search warrant at an apartment on the City’s northwest side, regarding a plot to poison the City of Chicago’s drinking water. The warrant was for poisons and chemicals that were going to be used to poison the water supply. One of the substances seized was identified as Typhoid Bacteria.

His passion was riding his bicycle thru the trails of the Chicago park system and forest preserves. He rode 2 or 3 times Each week on his 35-mile round trip trail. His longest ride was when he rode his bike from Chicago to Clintonville to visit his new grandson.

Ted will be remembered as a Humble, loving and soft-spoken man. But mostly he will be remembered for his humor. He was known as one of the best “fabricated” Story tellers of all time. He would tell his story’s while keeping a straight face. It often took us quite a while before realizing that he was pulling our leg.

Survivors include two children: a son, Bob (Vicki) McMillin, and a daughter, Lori McMillin, both of Clintonville. There are 5 grandchildren, Michelle Perwoznik-Kero and fiancé George Johnson, Nick (Kelly) McMillin, Anthony McMillin, Andy (Erin) Perwoznik, and Cindy Schneider and special friend Adam. There are 6 great grandchildren. He is further survived by one sister, June Berman, two sisters-in-law, Arlys and Pat Kuk, all from the Chicago area; and many nephews and nieces whom he loved all so very much. Ted was preceded in death by parents, Andrew and Maren McMillin; his wife, Bette who passed away in May of 2016; and two brothers-in-law, Bill and Herman Kuk.

Special thanks to the nurses and staff at the Shawano Hospital for all the genuine love and care they showed our father in his last days. Especially the special efforts his nurse Christine made for dad to communicate from his hospital room. She arranged for Ted to see and speak with his family via FaceTime on her personal iPhone.

Thank you also to Dr. Timothy Rasor and his entire medical staff for all the care he provided dad over the past several years.

Those that were close to Ted knew that he was always thinking of others, putting their needs before his own. He requested that we not have a service for him. Considering that his passing is largely due to the COVID-19 virus, we feel to gather as a group of family and friends would not be appropriate in these times, so we will honor his wishes.
