Pete was born on August 12, 1957 in Hialeah, FL and was the apple of our mother's eye. He graduated from Hialeah High School in 1975. He began working for Miami-Dade Water & Sewer in 1984. When one of his sisters made a snarky comment about his new place of employment, our mother rose to his defense and indignantly replied, "They give him gloves to wear and he turns knobs and things. He doesn't have to touch it!" His brother Wayne used to tease him by asking if he had received the message Wayne sent him. When Pete said no, Wayne would say, "That's strange - I flushed it down the toilet 3 days ago!" Regarding his job, Pete himself said the saying around the plant was, "When the s**t stops flowin', call Pete Owen!" Pete worked for MD W&S for 33 years and rose to the position of Treatment Plant Operator II, and held a State of Florida Class B Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator license. He was a union member of AFSCME Local 21. Pete was an intelligent man with a dry and funny sense of humor. He was an amateur "bomb" builder and had a license to be able to buy ingredients and make his own cherry bombs and M80s. He was quite inventive with his exploding devices, but decided his joy in making big explosions might be misunderstood in the years following 9/11 and so gave up this hobby. He was also fascinated by WWI biplanes, and liked to research the planes and build metal and paper models of them. His hobbies of jogging and bicycling diminished and finally stopped as he struggled with arthritis in his knees. He suffered with debilitating pain for the last years of his life, leading to depression. He tried many times to have bilateral knee replacements but was unable to successfully negotiate the current health care system. He was on the verge of retiring when he took his own life. Pete leaves behind many grieving friends, coworkers and family: siblings Cheryl Lombard, Kathy Kavalin (Steve), and Wayne Owen (Marion), nephews Michael Mauch (Becky), Cory Mauch (Monique), and Nicholas Lombard, 2 great nieces, 1 great nephew and many extended family members. May you find the peace on the other side, little brother, that eluded you here on Earth. We love you, Pete. Godspeed.
