Catalina Garcia

Obituary

We invite you to share condolences for Catalina Garcia, 20, of Cicero, Illinois, who was killed in the Northern Illinois University shooting in DeKalb, Illinois, on February 14, 2008.

The youngest of four siblings in a family from Guadalajara, Mexico, Catalina Garcia's family settled in suburban Cicero, west of Chicago.

The 20-year-old wanted to become a teacher, something her family admired.

"She was adored by our family because she wanted to become somebody in life - that's what she was going to school," her father, Jacinto Garcia, told Spanish-language radio station WOJO-FM, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

She was a 2006 graduate of Morton East High School, where she belonged to the Yearbook Club and a campus dance group. She was shy, very bright and a good student, recalled Michael Parrie, her chemistry teacher junior year.

"She always had a smile on her face, such a positive attitude and outlook on life. It was contagious," Parrie said.

Not sure what to say?

Rest in peace.

“For here I am creating new heavens and a new earth; and the former things will not be called to mind, neither will they come up into the heart." Isaiah 65:17. Comforting words to help us appreciate God's willingness to rectify our losses, allay our fears, and diminish evil acts of any kind here to come forever.

MI MAS SENTIDO PESAME PARA TODA LA FAMILIA. 02/14/08 ELLA PARTIO HACE UN AnO DE NUESTRAS VIDAS, PERO NO DE NUESTROS CORAZONEZ.

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Catalina. It hurts for me to think that such a bright and kind-minded Husky could be lost; NIU will never forget the loss of such a promising student.

I remember Cathy in my AP English Class as well as Physics. Always having fun and fooling around. We were inseparable in those two classes, any project any assignment. It was just those two classes that showed how funny, outgoing, and unpredictable Cathy was, or "Cat" like we would say. At first you would think she was a shy girl, but once she opened up she had all of us laughing. Those two hours that we spent together each day for our last year of H.S. was enough to leave memories for a...
