In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials. Clara Geneva (Duer) Hassel, the daughter of Carl W. and Elnora (Madsen) Duer, was born March 22, 1921, in Halfa, Iowa. She passed away Saturday, September 7, 2013, at Valley Vue Care Center in Armstrong, Iowa, at the age of 92. She received her education in the Halfa school, graduating from Halfa High School in 1938. Then Clara attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she earned her teaching certificate. On May 20, 1944, Clara was united in marriage to Joseph Paul Hassel at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont, Minnesota. Paul and Clara moved to Ottawa, Illinois, for a time where Paul was employed. They returned to the Ringsted area and along with raising a family and being a homemaker, Clara also taught school at Hoprig Rural School, Callender Public School, Halfa Consolidated School, Lakota Public School and the Armstrong Community School. She also taught at Armstrong-Ringsted for 4 years when the two schools merged. Clara retired from teaching school for 30 years in 1983. Joseph died February 26, 2002. Clara was a member of United Lutheran Church where she served on many committees and circles and taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years. She was also a member of the National Education Association. Left to cherish Clara's memory are, three sons, Michael Hassel and his wife, Sherry of Goodyear, Arizona, Reverend William "Bill" Hassel and his wife, Renee of Victoria, Texas; Leonard Hassel and his wife, Jane of North Platte, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Elizabeth and her husband, Jason, Wyatt and his wife, Rebecca, Timothy and his wife, Heidi, Ellen; Jill and her husband, Jared; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Abigail, Garrett and Nora; "adopted granddaughter," Lori Walders Bensley and her husband, Evan; and sister-in-law, Millie Duer of Armstrong. Preceding Clara in death were her husband; an infant daughter, Marilyn; her parents and brother's, Leonard, Norman and Arnold Duer and sister-in-law, Margaret Mammen.
