Daniel Traynor Obituary

Oakdale - Daniel Traynor, age 78, passed away at his home April 11, 2025. He was born in Homestead, Pa., April 17, 1946, to the late Michael and Dorothy Eiker Traynor. He married Susan (Gardner) Traynor July 20, 1968, at New London. She survives him.

Daniel graduated from Fitch High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Army. He worked as a machinist at Whiton in New London, turbine manufacturing at Terry Corporation and plastic extrusions at Davis-Standard. After a turbulent plane ride home from Vietnam, Dan preferred not to fly for a time, but he loved taking his wife and driving cross-country to national parks like Yellowstone and Zion. Favorite beaches included Folly, S.C. and Key West; and also Civil War sites with the Gettys, and pulling lobster traps on Vinalhaven, Maine. Closer to home, they enjoyed camping with the Fold & Go Club. Pastimes included saltwater fishing in the Sound, plus every lake this side of Connecticut.

Besides his loving wife, he is survived by a son, Joseph Thomas Traynor, and his wife Jennifer of North Berwick, Maine; a daughter, Pamela Hellwig, and her husband Gregory of Preston. Grandchildren include Emma, Willow and Preston Traynor and Clayton Plourde. He also leaves behind a brother, Michael Traynor; and sisters, Maryann Bower, Dorothy Zuckerman, and Elizabeth Josephine Scott. He is predeceased by brothers, Louie and James Traynor.

Family and friends may visit Church and Allen Montville Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 14, and from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 15. To Susan and family, it's so sad to hear of Dan's passing. So many great memories, including union negotiations and playing softball together for the Terry Steamers at Veterans Field in Niantic. Favorite recollection was the night Dan hit 5 home runs in 5 at bats. The 6th time he came up with bases loaded, so they walked him intentionally. He just laughed. That was Danny!

We are so very sorry for your loss. I always loved seeing Dan drop you off and pick you up from quilting retreat camp. He was always smiling and quite obviously a gentleman and your knight who didn´t need shiny armor! I know you´ll always treasure your camping adventures together-the fond memories are yours to keep close to your heart. Love and hugs, Jane and Brian
