York Harbor, ME-David Barrie, 93, of Sentry Hill, York Harbor, ME died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006. He was born in Brookline, MA the son of George N. and Elinore B. Barrie. David was internationally known as an expert in case management of catastrophic injuries. He directed the catastrophic injury rehabilitation program for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company and was active in many organizations in his field. He was on the Board of the National Paraplegia Foundation and was the only lay member on the Board of the U.S. Veteran's Administration Spinal Cord Injury Service. As a member of the International Society of Paraplegia, he was the only lay person from North America ever to address the annual meeting of the Society (Heidelberg, 1972). He was also a member of the Massachusetts Association of Paraplegics, the National Rehabilitation Association and the Steering Committee of the New England Spinal Cord Injury Office.
He was a guest lecturer at Boston University School of Medicine and Southern Methodist University Law School. He was also co-author of various scientific papers on the subject of catastrophic injuries and travelled and spoke extensively on the non-medical aspects of spinal cord injury case management. David personally directed, guided or participated in the rehabilitation of over 200 catastrophic injury patients, including the conveying of a paraplegic patient to Liberia on behalf of the U.S. State Department.
In addition, he was a charter member of both the South Shore Association for Retarded Children and the Scituate, Massachusetts Youth Center. He was also Chairman of the Scituate Personnel Board.
He was predeceased by a son, Peter and his beloved wife, Jane (Brooks) Barrie, to whom he was married for 65 years. He is survived by a son, Richard Barrie; a daughter, Johanna Barrie Mangion and son-in-law, Robert Mangion all of Kittery Point, ME. He also leaves grandsons, Stephen Barrie of Concord, NH, Philip Chase and his wife, Susan Vaughn of Needham, MA, Brooks Chase and his wife, Angela of Duxbury, MA and their daughters, Abigail Jane and Amelia Katherine. He also leaves step grandchildren, Jon Mangion and his wife, Eleanor of Brooklyn, NY, Sarah Mangion of San Francisco, CA and Almaz Asresahin of Somerville, MA.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no public memorial service. He will be buried in Bethel, ME.
