David Crowley
August 13, 1931 - January 6, 2021
Beaufort, South Carolina - David Meehan Crowley, 89, of Beaufort, South Carolina, died Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at his home. Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at 11:00 am at St. Helena Cemetery.
Mr. Crowley was born on August 13, 1931 in Camden, New Jersey. He is the son of the late Joseph Crowley and Mildred Meehan Crowley.
Dave was a proud graduate of Drexel University, with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He was immensely happy in is career and was well respected in his field. He held senior positions with ARCO and British Petroleum, where he was in charge of projects around the world, including Selbaie Copper Mine in Quebec, Canada and Black Thunder Mine in Wyoming.
Dave's passion for nature and hiking was passed on to his children through weeks long camping trips to the Sierra Nevada. Over miles of trails he taught them to value nature as he did. His love of the sea was lifelong. In the waves of California's beaches, he taught his children to swim and body surf, and on his 70th birthday, he taught his grandchildren how to ride the waves in the ocean where he surfed as a child.
Dave was an academic with an unending search for knowledge and adventure. He read daily and traveled extensively with his beloved wife, Martha.
Martha, whom he met while working at ARCO, was the love of his life and they were married for forty-three years. Dave always treated Martha's children as if they were his own.
Dave's legacy lives on through his children and grandchildren. There wasn't a cat he didn't love, or a mountain he didn't admire.
He is survived by his children with his first wife, Elizabeth Crowley: Christopher Crowley, Lisa Crowley Walls, (Steve), Deborah Tribble, (Dean) and Raymond Crowley. He is also survived by his stepdaughters Elizabeth Champion (Robert) and Catharine Karl Millikan (Gary). He is predeceased by his stepson, Willard Karl III (Martha). In addition, he had twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to St. Helena Preservation Trust, P. O. Box 1043, Beaufort, SC 29901.
Anderson Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.
