Captain Cummins was my skipper on the Nicholas in 1961 through November 1962, a period which included a busy and successful deployment to the Western Pacific, including a lengthy patrol during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He ran a tight, but happy ship and always seemed to be on an even keel. He taught me a lot as a junior officer, as there was much teaching to be accomplished.
