David Depp Obituary

David Alan Depp died of cancer after a courageous battle on May 11, 2017, at the age of 74. He was born on October 26, 1942 to the late Dr. O. R. Depp and Alma Cates Depp. David graduated from Isidore Newman School, Tulane University, and Tulane Medical School and began his surgical career at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. David served in the USNR as a ship surgeon on the U.S.S. Enterprise and was discharged as a Lieutenant Commander before returning to Louisiana with his wife Karen to raise their family. David loved his work as a thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon, and after retiring found new joy in mentoring Tulane University medical students through a program at the Baton Rouge General. David was an authentic man of great intelligence, and treated his own cancer diagnosis with an intellectual curiosity that was remarkable under the circumstances. When he was not actively practicing medicine or teaching, David loved nothing more than puttering in his garden, surrounded by birds, bees and his beloved canine companions. He is preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Joshua Alexander (1993-1995) and survived by his wife of 49 years, two daughters Kristin and Natalie (Charlie Rasco), two granddaughters, Hannah Cates and Lucy Sterling Bernick, and his dog Buddy, all of whom will miss him dearly. He is also survived by his five siblings, O.R. Ill, Diane, Douglas, John Donovan, Debra, his stepmother Beverly, and their families, whom he loved dearly. On Monday, May 15, visitation will be held at 11:00 am followed by services at 12:00 pm at Rabenhorst Funeral Home at 825 Government Street, downtown. All are welcome to attend and take part in celebrating David's life. The family wishes to express great thanks to Dr. Depp's treatment team and everyone who has had a hand in extending his life, most especially Dr. M. Patrick Stagg, who was also his trusted friend. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Joseph Hospice (10615 Jefferson Hwy, Baton Rouge, LA 70809) or Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge (550 Lobdell Avenue, Baton Rouge, LA 70806).

My very deepest condolences to Dr. Depp's family. Today, April 22, marks 33 years ago that Dr. Depp saved my life.....physically and spiritually. I was in a car accident and my aorta was ruptured beyond repair. He told my family there was 0% chance of survival. He told me in the surgery prep room he wasn't sure that he could save me. The truth set me free that day. On that table I gave my life to Jesus. Dr. Depp said it was a miracle that I lived and he took no credit. I am forever grateful that God used him that day to give me a second chance. My life has been completely changed since 4/22/88. God is good!

David was a good and loyal friend and fraternity brother during my college years. I wish I had seen more of him, as I promised on that airplane, but life got very busy with my marriage after that honeymoon plane ride. My deepest sympathies go out to Karen and family.

I send my sincere sympathy to the family of Dr. Depp. I worked in ICU and Recovery Room in the 1970's and took care of Dr. Depp"s patients at OLOL and The General. He was known as a fine and respected surgeon in the city of Baton Rouge. The nurses would recommend his expertise to anyone who needed his care. He was a kind and gentle man and physician. I will always remember him. "May the choirs of angels come to greet you. May they speed you to paradise. May the Lord enfold you in his mercy. May you find eternal life."

My sincere sympathy and prayers to the family of Dr. Depp. He saved my brother's life and gave us 8 months more with him than we would have had. He also did open heart surgery on both of my parents. Our family so grateful to Dr. Depp and so impressed not only with his medical skill but also his compassion and friendly smile. What a blessing he was to so many people. Also loved his cowboy boots! May the Lord be with his family and surround them with His comfort and peace.

My sincere condolences to Dr. Depp' s family. I will always remember and be thankful for the kind, compassionate young redhead who saved my father's life in 1977. I remember my mom saying that he was just too young to be a heart surgeon! I have never forgotten how God loved us enough to send Dr. Depp, enabling us to have several more years with my dad. May God comfort you with the memories of a well-lived life.

How grateful we are to have spent time with Karen and David just a couple of years ago when they visited Sedona. Dean served on USS Enterprise with David in the early 70's, while Karen, Kristin and I spent many a day together.....a life time ago. Dean and I send our heartfelt condolences.

To :The Depp Family! Shocked and saddened. My Prayers are with You all.
Gone but not forgotten. Dr. Depp was a gem; an absolute gentleman. It was a joy and an honor to work along side of Dr. Depp at Baton Rouge General Midcity on 5NW-Med/Surg. Unit. We often ran accross each other with our daughters at K-Mart on College drive. We had to make sure we had our girls' potties in back of car when they needed them. He often gave me that broad smile, saying " Bobbie did you bring your bucket? and I responded with" Oh yes!"
I think our girls were about the same age at that time, Brigitte is 51yrs. old now. Sleep & Rest Peacefully "Doc" in the arms of Our Heavenly Father!!!
With fond memories,God Bless you all!!

Thinking of you all in this sad time. Sending you strength to get through the days. I love your family and will always remembe how laid back and easily amused Dr. Depp was with us as kids! I fondly remember loving hanging out at your house and the generosity of your parents allowing me to go to SnowBird one year with y'all! I know he will be greatly missed.
Sending love your way
