I first met David more than 40 years ago. He had come to DNA People's Legal Services to interview. He showed up in my office in Window Rock on a Friday afternoon and introduced himself. He stayed the weekend and joined a small group of us on Saturday to go to Chaco Canyon and to hike in the Bisti. We became friends that day and I was delighted to learn the following week that he would return to work at DNA in about 30 days.

It is sad to think that David is gone. Those of us who worked in the Office of Attorney General will remember him for being a hard worker, dedicated to the clients he served, cheerful, and something of a sceptic. He didn't think much of the standard, pat answers and proposals that people give when talking about how to improve the lives of tribal peoples. He would communicate that with his eyes -- like, "Do you actually believe what you are talking about?" He had his patterns. ...
