Feerick Funeral Home - Shorewood Obituary

David Gerald Martyn, a dedicated dentist and beloved community member, passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at the age of 63.

On September 11, 1961, David was born in Evanston, Illinois, to K. Lee Martyn, Jr. of Fremont, Nebraska and Lorna "Lyn" Martyn (née Hayes) of Kaeo, New Zealand. Steadfastly loyal to friends and extremely devoted to family, David is survived by Monica Jeanne (née Rajkovacz), his wife of 27 years, his son Benjamin Lee, twin daughters Grace Carolyn and Hannah Elizabeth Martyn, and his sister Susan Lee Martyn of Minneapolis.

Growing up in Granada Hills near Los Angeles and then in the San Francisco Bay Area, he joined the BSA, became an Eagle Scout, and was inducted into the Order of the Arrow. David was an earnest Episcopalian acolyte, excelled in Pop Warner football and Little League baseball, swam competitively in the Amateur Athletic Union, lettered in wrestling, and graduated a member of the National Honor Society from North Gate High School in Walnut Creek, California. In 1980 he attended DePauw University, Indiana, where he pledged Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, served on the Student Senate, played intramural sports, worked as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and as a Kappa Alpha Theta waiter, and volunteered for a medical team winter term mission to El Conacaste, Guatemala. As a graduate student at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, he resumed his role as an EMT, before completing a two-year General Practice Residency at Louisiana State University with an internship at the Charity Hospital Emergency Room in New Orleans.

In 1989 David earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery at Marquette University, Milwaukee, then worked in two Whitefish Bay dental practices before becoming a partner in 1995 at Drs. Potter, Potter, Larson & Martyn. Up until his death, he was a partner at Drs. Larson, Martyn & Hafner, LLP in Mequon, Wisconsin, where he resided since 1998 and served as Scoutmaster of BSA Troop 865.

Generously involved throughout his life in local churches, charities, Rotary clubs, Kiwanis organizations, and the Masonic Lodge, David also held leadership positions in the Dental Forum of Milwaukee, belonged to the American College of Dentists, was active in the American Dental Association since graduate school, was a member of the Xi chapter of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society, and taught at Marquette University Dental School as an Adjunct Associate Professor.

David loved family beach vacations, visits with New Zealand relatives, the great outdoors, wood fires, and physical activity, including hunting, camping, and frisbee golf, and completed a marathon with his sister. Dave's goodness touched innumerable lives.

Visitation will be held at Feerick Funeral Home (2025 E. Capitol Dr., Shorewood, WI 53211) from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. A second visitation will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at St. Rita (Three Holy Women Parish, 1617 N Cass St, Milwaukee, WI 53202) from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, followed by Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10:00 AM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be live-streamed, please click here to watch. The location to gather and share remembrances following the funeral will be announced before the conclusion of Mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made in David's name to the Boy Scouts of America or the Xi chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society.

Not sure what to say?

I was shocked and saddened to hear about Dr. Martyn’s passing. I had him as my dentist after Dr. Potter retired. If for some reason I had to change dentists I always wanted and did came back to Dr. Martyn. My condolences and prayers.

My condolences to Dr. Martyn's family. I moved from the milwaukee area 10 yrs ago, yet returned to see Dr. Martyn for dental needs. He was a fine person, and provider, and graciously attended my brass band concerts with his wife. I will miss his friendship.

So sad to hear this news. Our kids played football and went to school together. He was also my dentist. He will be missed. My condolences go out to the family.

So proud of my cousin David. What a beautiful family he and Monica created. Love to you all.

We were Dr. Martyn’s patients for a number of years. We had great respect for him
as a fine dentist and as a great person. He was low-key, soft spoken with an intelligent sense of humor. He cared about our comfort level during a procedure. He even thanked us for allowing him to treat our dental concerns. Dr. Martyn has left us way too soon. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and all who worked with this good and sensitive person. Gods speed,
Mr. & Mrs. Adrian Bonini

Man I will miss you Dr. Martyn. I can't give Melody (at work) all the headlocks so without you there to take some of the pressure off her, I will be sad. Godspeed.

I'm so Dr.Martyn was a very good person, my condolences to his family, friends and co- workers. You will be missed Dr. MARTYN
It was always a pleasure to work with you.

I am stunned and saddened to learn of Dr Martyn’s sudden passing. He has been my wonderful dentist for many years, and will be dearly missed. My heartfelt condolences to the Martyn Family and to the entire team at Drs Larson, Martyn & Hafner, LLP.
