Not sure what to say?

I played for Coach Powell at South Eugene 1968 and 1969. I was co-captain with Bruce Myers. We had a good year our senior year, but not good enough to make the playoffs. He was a good coach, and had a good staff. Del Freeman was also a good coach and teacher. Give-em-the AXE!!

I was a newspaper writer who interviewed Dave several times while covering his Hillsboro teams. He was also a boyhood hero to this young Duck fan. He was the very model of an educator: Using his field of expertise to teach young people the fundamentals of life and prepare them for their futures. Very few teachers and coaches I've known in over 60 years ever did it as well. His legacy of humanity is secure. Godspeed, Dave.

Our family is thinking about your family during this difficult time. I'm sure Dave is in Heaven with Traci and that they've had a great reunion. Thinking of them both today. I will see you at the memorial service. Carla (Dugan) Saunders

So sorry for the loss of such a great man! Dave was neighbor, friend, co-worker and most of all a brother in Christ. The world takes the body but Got takes the soul and we all can be assured of where Dave´s soul is .

Dave Powell was my football coach at South Eugene for the two years I was able to play varsity in the fall of 1965 and 1966. In '66 he took a gamble and introduced a totally innovative offense to our team. The first year we ran the run and shoot, Bob Main threw for more touchdowns and yards than anybody in the state and was named co all state quarterback. Dave, Mike Rose and Harry Johnson taught us how to win and just how miserable practice can be if we lost a game that we should have won. ...

While I never had Dave as a teacher or coach, I was around him quite a bit when my late father Duane Mellem was athletic director at South Eugene High School. I was always impressed by Dave, and I know that Mel thought the world of him.
