Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions - Hampton Obituary

Denise Rebecca Harris, 67, transitioned on Sunday October 2, 2016.  She was born on March 31, 1949 in Newport News, VA to the parents of Ethelridge Pearson and Annie Mae Hall.

Denise attended Newport News public schools where she graduated from Hunting High School in 1968.  She married Floyd Lynch and had one daughter, and then married her current husband Joseph Henry Harris III where she had a daughter and gained a step daughter and son and adopted 2 daughters and son.

Denise is survived by her mother, Annie Mae Davis; husband, Joseph Henry Harris III; children, Malaika Burton, Tiffaney Harris, Jamar Turner, Angelique Allmond-Harris, Linda Bancroft, Barbara Smith (James Smith) and Joseph Harris IV (Shawnte’);sisters, Marsha Blackburn (Jim Blackburn), Marlene Legrant, Arnita Spencer Williams ; brothers, Ethelridge Pearson (Florence), Gurney Anderson (Arnethia) and Todd Davis, fourteen grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

A natural born caregiver, she became a Girl Scout leader, did home day care, foster care for the city of Newport News, therapeutic foster care for Lutheran Family Service of Virginia, and was an adult care provider with serenity C&C Inc.  We call her “Beloved Mother to Many” she always had the time and the patience to do what she does best. Because of this she was constantly being reminded that she was “Anointed To Do This” meaning she was gifted by God to work with children, their families, and adults that others were unable to handle on a daily basis. Denise was an avid traveler and would always say “Since I can’t take it with me I might as well use it to travel” She enjoyed many trips with Vacations to Remember (Jacquelyn Langston) where she met and made many friends that cared and loved her just as her family. Denise was the back bone of her family, a confidant, advice giver, and keeper of the peace even until the day of her transition. We all love her and have many memories and experiences that we have shared with her. Hold on to the good times and remember what she stood for, that her memory may live on in unity, hope, love and peace.

The Celebration of Life will be held Friday, October 14, 2016 at 2:00 PM, at Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions, 2609 Cunningham Dr. in Hampton.

To the family of the late Denise Harris:

I was saddened to hear of the passing of your loved one. I met Denise through the Foster Care program and we became "parenting" buddies. My prayer is that you be comforted during this time of sorrow knowing that God is too wise to make an error and too just to be unkind.

Prayerfully submitted,

Mary Orie, 2205 Oak Av. Newport News, VA
