Donald Perry Byers, 93, of Elizabethtown, PA, and formerly of Perry County passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at the Masonic Village Health Care Center, Elizabethtown. Born December 25, 1920 in Harrisburg, PA he was the son of the late Walter D. and Mary E. (Burd) Byers. He was the husband of 71 years to the late Mary Anna (Haas) Byers who died April 25, 2012. Donald was a veteran in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII serving in the Pacific Theater. Upon his discharge, he was later briefly recalled during the Korean War. Donald was a life time Railroad Engineer working for The Pennsylvania Railroad and later retiring from Conrail after more than 40 years of service. His memberships include the Union Lodge #324 F&AM Masonic Lodge in Mifflintown, PA, Scottish Rite Valley of Harrisburg, PA, Zembo Shrine, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, The National Sojourners, Inc. Harrisburg Chapter #76 and the Silver Wing Fraternity where he was a life member and recently awarded the 50 year membership pin. Donald is survived by two sons, Donald R. Byers and wife Rosemary of Hummelstown, PA and Perry W. Byers and wife Alice of Duncannon; three sisters, Kathryn Shaffer of Carlisle, PA, Virginia Dowdrick of Marysville, PA and M. Eleanor Fissel of Enola, PA; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, Donald was preceded in death by one brother, Luther S. Byers. The funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Monday, September 22, 2014 at the Ronald C.L. Smith Funeral Home Duncannon, PA. The Rev. Alan Foor will officiate. The visitation will be 3:00-5:00PM, Sunday, September 21, 2014 and 10:00-11:00 AM, Monday, September 22, 2014 at the funeral home. Burial will be 11:30 AM, Tuesday, September 23, 2014 in Ft. Indiantown Gap National Cemetery Annville, PA, where military honors shall be accorded. Military Chaplin Rev. Bruce D. Farrell will officiate.
